Confused and Impressionable
People are, of course, invested with free will, but they are also vulnerable to becoming infused with righteous indignation brought to them by the kindly auspices of Islamist sites which specialize in inflaming the powerful anger of young Muslim - men in particular. Those of a disposition to protect women, particularly Muslim women, from the depraved intentions of non-Muslim men.If this seems contradictory given the manner in which many Muslim men degrade their wives and daughters by treating them as assets and possessions, not human beings, it is simply one of the many paradoxes that present themselves to the curious attempting to understand what motivates violent jihadists who in their 'normal' lives, are ordinary, studious, 'good' people who would never dream of harming a hair on anyone's head, even non-Muslims.
One such individual being, it would appear, from his testimony in a court of justice, a 21-year-old man born in Mitrovica, northern Kosovo, who had arrived in Frankfurt, Germany with his family as a youngster, to find safe haven from the murderous religious-tribal-ethnic violence that took place in his geographic area of original residence.
Arid Uka, whose parents, according to his testimony, were never very religious, grew up in Frankfurt. Presumably he must have absorbed some of the values prevalent in the indigenous society. Become conversant with the conventions of the country that had adopted him and given him solace and haven. Assimilated, since he is a young man, to a goodly degree, one assumes.
In an innocent intent to become a better Muslim, he began searching on the Internet for inspirational sites that would assist him in that intention. What he found was "lies" and "propaganda", contained in a video purporting to claim American soldiers in Afghanistan raped an Afghan woman.
"I started looking into Islam. My family doesn't know much about Islam. I thought I would become a better Muslim", he explained.
"I want to apologize to everyone. On March 2, I killed two people and opened fire on three others. Today I can't understand myself how I could have acted this way. It was total idiocy and in contradiction with my [religious] beliefs. No one should think of imitating me. After seeing the video showing a raped Afghan woman, I was shocked, like paralyzed. I tried to rid myself of the picture by praying. Come morning, I was completely overwrought and worn out."In his agitated state he compulsively and deliberately obtained a pistol, ammunition and two knives, placing them in a backpack and travelled by bus to the Frankfurt airport. How, on the spur of the moment, he could avail himself of a firearm and ammunition, hasn't been explained. At the airport, however, he saw two American soldiers preparing to board a bus for the Ramstein airbase.
He cadged a cigarette from one of the young men, (21 and 25 years of age), asked whether they were en route to Afghanistan. He followed them after loading his pistol, shot one at point-blank range at the back of the head, killing him instantly; leaped onto the bus, shouting "Allahu Akbar", and shot the 21-year-old driver before firing on two more soldiers, aged 21 and 25, seriously injuring them.
This, evidently was his introduction to the formula toward becoming a better Muslim; hatred and impulsive spontaneity satisfying the rage within. His trial has begun, and undoubtedly when found guilty as charged, he will have ample time in his incarcerated future to contemplate the struggle to achieve his purpose, having assimilated the 'lies' that captured his irate imagination.
