The Exceptional Sarah Palin

Her appeal to the political right once made her a likely candidate for high office. There was a period, though, when she was first nominated as a running mate for vice-president for a Republican presidential hopeful, John McCain, when she looked like the real McCoy. An independent, strong-willed, intelligent woman capable of asserting herself into public office higher than mere governor of a very cold State.

And then, little tidbits of information began to seep out and she appeared to be rather less than what she initially promised, in the minds of the hopeful. And how she was beginning to be perceived also began to taint John McCain's candidacy, since he began to appear to be less endowed with good judgement than most American voters had felt him to be. And now she appeals to the loony-right.

Her choice as running mate - that seemed at one time to be inspired, perking up the electorates' interest in an otherwise dull campaign where the Republicans just hadn't a chance against the truly inspired choice of the Democrats - had its backlash. From the stunningly stupid things she would utter like seeing Russia in the Alaskan distance, to costing the Republicans mucho dinero for designer shmatahs.

Her evangelical, down-home, big-game-hunting, soccer-mom style came akimbo with the revelation that her teen-age daughter was, although informally 'betrothed', pregnant. The official betrothal was swift in arrangement, and the future son-in-law smartly introduced to the public, a tight little family that stuck together and for whom the potential for abortion was simply ungodly, witness Sarah Palin's devotion to her youngest son.

Will she or won't she? With the introduction of Minnesotan Michele Bachmann, with her equally solid credentials, as a fiercely independent, brainy, mouthy Republican presidential aspirant, Sarah Palin appears rather redundant, although yet beloved of her Tea Party cohorts. Sarah Palin, you naughty, naughty woman. Bedding with a basketball star while betrothed to your now-hubby?

Giving cocaine a try? Well, we all have youthful indiscretionary flings in our backgrounds. But not all of us have so carefully crafted an image that has erupted with wobbly holes in the fabric of exceptionalism.
