Shockingly, Mr. Trump Misdirects His Ire

"Shockingly, our 'brilliant' NATO Ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S. Military Base, to Mauritius, and to do so FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER."
"There is no doubt that China and Russia have noticed this act of total weakness."
"The UK giving away extremely important land is an act of GREAT STUPIDITY, and is another in a very long line of National Security reasons why Greenland has to be acquired."

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in an effort to calm tensions over Greenland and also to patch over a frayed transatlantic relationship, had moved to hand sovereignty over the Chagos Islands back to Mauritius, with the British government explaining it reached that decision for the purpose of protecting the security of the base from international legal challenges.

"The U.K. will never compromise on our national security. This deal secures the operations of the joint U.S.-U.K. base on Diego Garcia for generations, with robust provisions for keeping its unique capabilities intact and our adversaries out", explained a government spokesperson.

The agreement had been signed back in May for the U.K. to surrender sovereignty over the Chagos Islands following two centuries of British control. The plan is for the U.K. to pay Mauritius up to 120 million pounds ($223 million) yearly to lease the island of Diego Garcia back, for 99 years, where the American base is located. At the time, the U.S. government supported the agreement, agreeing that it "secures the long-term, stable, and effective operation of the joint U.S.U.K. military facility at Diego Garcia".

That was then. This is now, where a startled British government was forced to defend its decision after U.S. President Trump attacked the plan. Relinquishing the remote Indian Ocean archipelago, where a strategically important American naval and bomber base is located, he averred, was an act of stupidity illustrative of why he so desperately requires the takeover of Greenland for the United States.

U.K. Cabinet Minister Pat McFadden ventured the opinion that a flurry of social media posts from Trump "criticizing a number of world leaders", is an indication that the president "is frustrated right now" in the face of European allies pushing back on  his imperative of the U.S. owning Greenland. "I don't really believe this is about Chagos I think it's about Greenland", stated McFadden.

Home to about 2,500 mostly American personnel, the U.S. describes the Diego Garcia base as "an all but indispensable platform" for security operations in the Middle East, South Asia and East Africa.
