International Laws of Moral Turpitude

The "new" United Nations Human rights Council, still heavily laden with the same corrupt representatives of countries for whom human rights violations are the order of the day, and under the leadership of Canada's very own Commissioner Louise Arbour, has threatened, and now makes haste to make good on its threat, to haul Israel before its scrutiny under a "comprehensive investigation" leading to charges of war crimes.

While undergoing righteously-indignant steps to lauch and fulfil the investigation, no mention whatever is made of condemnation for Hezbollah whose daily rocket attacks on Israel kill, maim and cause critical infrastructure damage in the reverse-image of what Israel's defensive-offensive is doing in Lebanon. That Hezbollah's fanatical wish to destroy the Jewish State led to the current situation is handily overlooked, obviously irrelevant to the matter at hand: total condemnation of Israel for "war crimes". No extenuating, explicable circumstances, no larger investigation into cause and effect - no big surprise.
"These moves cap a month-long mad rush of Geneva-based UN human rights bodies and officials to condemn Israel over its actions in Lebanon," said Hillel Neuer, executive director of the Geneva-based UN Watch.
The outrage has been fed largely by rights-groups' reactions to initial death-toll figures by Israel's aerial strike at Qana, figures found to be deliberately inflated, later confirmed to be roughly half of the original numbers declared. Somewhat akin to Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's lamentations of "more than 40" killed in an Israeli airstrike a week on, later to be downgraded by Mr. Siniora to a single death. A massacre of one. But of course, the UNHRC remembers its outrage at "original" figures, handily taking no notice of corrections of inflated numbers.

Why be surprised? This is the same Human Rights Council that was formed from the ashes of its discredited predecessor, the UN Human Rights Commission; no need to alter that handy acronym. The change took place because of irrefutable bias leading to complaints that the Commission was controlled by countries whose true self-interested purpose of being part of the Commission was to shield themselves from criticism because of their personal histories of human rights abuses. This is the same body that saw fit to cast a vote in July, 29 - 11 deploring Israel's military operations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip; defensive reactions by Israel.

Canada, unlike citizen Louise Arbour, opposed the July condemnation of Israel, while five countries abstained, with the United States and Israel (both not members of the Council) charged that the condemnation represented business as usual, a continuation of the anti-Israel bias of the former commission. Huge, big surprise, however much-anticipated.

Reminds one of Kofi Annan's instant denunciation of Israel after the strike on the UN (UNIFIL) post in the Bekaa Valley resulting in the unfortunate deaths of three UN personnel. (Leading the United Nations to finally wake up to the reality that with a war ongoing in the area, unarmed United Nations observers were sitting ducks, something the Canadian UN observer, among the three killed himself knew, although he continued to follow orders. Waking up to the facts on the ground and in the air, the UN pulled its observers out of harm's way.) Although Israel promised an investigation, then apologized for the sad outcome of an error of military targetting, it is of more than passing interest to note that Hezbollah rockets slammed into the UN peacekeepers' Lebanon headquarters in the town of Henniye on Sunday. No statement of outraged accusation was levelled at Hezbollah, no censure was heard to pass Mr. Annan's lips on behalf of the United Nations.

Complete and utter moral bankruptcy.
