Warning, Britain: Do Not Alienate British Muslims
British Muslims, or rather those in high places, within government itself, and those who serve as clerics in British mosques, along with spokespersons for the Muslim community at large have put Britain on notice: do not further antagonize Muslims, or face the consequences. This is an offensive tactic. This is not a defensive remark, in the wake of the recent apprehension of British-born Muslim Islamofascists - or, perhaps it is. In any event, it is a form of psychological blackmail, an expression that leaves little doubt that official Britain in the choices it has made as a government is solely responsible for the murderous intent on its soil by Muslim youth who have been radicalized to believe that lethal jihad is a requirement of their faith, that they have a moral and religious obligation to become jihadists in the name of Islam.Appeasement, according to these high-ranking British Muslims is the order of the day. Otherwise, face the unfortunate, anticipated fall-out. And the blame will be laid squarely at the feet of those British politicians who have chosen otherwise. Those, led by Prime Minister Tony Blair who have unequivocally determined that Islamic Jihad, the Taliban, Hamas, Hezbollah and others of their ilk are murderous thugs whose determination to shape the world according to their vision must be stopped. To do otherwise would be to consign the world we know and take comfort in, to a dread and drear world of Islamofascist occupation and dictate.
While we're at it, there's another thing: stop naming Muslims, Islam and fanatical Islam as suspects, culprits or 'alleged conspirators' in news stories. And while we're being so cautionary, forget about naming fanatic Muslims as Islamofascists, since they have determined that the nomenclature belongs rightfully to Israel and the Jews; they alone practise racism and fascism. Get the picture? What the world has had indelibly inscribed upon its consciousness of late, that all Islamic terrorists have been Muslim, is to be flicked into oblivion. In case this seems too drearily difficult to believe, let alone to contemplate as resembling any kind of intelligent truth, consider this:
The most comprehensive survey to date of Muslim opinion in Britain has revealed some dramatic, troubling and somewhat incomprehensible facts.
- NOP Research (broadcast by Channel4-TV on August 7) has determined that 50% of British Muslims believe that 9/11 was an American/Israeli conspiracy;
- Fully 25% of British Muslim believe the July 7 2005 subway attacks in London were justified because of British support for the U.S.-led war on terror;
- One in four British Muslims feel Britain is not their own country;
- Thirty percent would prefer to live under Sharia law;
- Half of those interviewed said they would, given the opportunity, move to a country governed by Sharia law;
- Twenty-eight percent dream of the United Kingdom becoming a fundamentalist Islamic state (correlating to 2005's Daily Telegraph newspaper survey which found that one-third believe Western society is decadent and immiral and that Muslims should seek to end it);
- Seventy-eight percent support punishment for the Danish journalists who published cartoons they felt were insulting to Muhammad;
- Sixty-eight percent support arrest and prosecution for anyone who "insults Islam".
According to Patrick Basham, Director of the Democracy Institute, British intelligence services estimated that one percent of British Muslims either support or are involved in terrorism, and since there is an estimated 1.6 million Muslims in Britain, that would indicate there are 16,000 potential Muslim terrorists on British soil. Moreover, he states the British government has information that three thousand British Muslims have returned to Britain from al-Qaeda training camps abroad.
With sobering numbers like those, and with the certain knowledge that radical Islam is alive and well and raring to go in the United Kingdom, it's quite likely that the great balance of moderate Muslims either are discomfitted by this knowledge, find comfort in it, or simply don't care very much. For it is from their core that these disaffected, alienated British-born Muslims come, and it is from the mouths of their friends, neighbours and family that we hear about what nice people they are, how they love to play sports, how it could not be possible that they would ever contemplate such murderous acts, since they are so caring.
In the words of Afsun Qureshi, a Canadian of Pakistani origin now living in London:
"Any real solution lies within the bedrock of the community - family and school. Fathers and mothers, along with university professors and deans who are aware of what is going on at the local Muslim student association, should be talking to their sons and daughters and students. They are in the best position to stop terrorism from sprouting. But that doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon."
