The Ferocity of Religious Disagreement and the Greater Glory of God

There just does not seem to be any boundaries beyond which religious zealots who claim to worship Allah will not pass in their boundless zeal to honour Islam and the god of Islam. To torture, maim and murder other Muslims is felt to be a performance of holy fealty because - be they Shiites opposed to Sunni or vice versa - they are held to practise a type of Islam that Allah finds offensive.

So when Sunni fanatics murder innocent Shia citizens they can claim great satisfaction in doing the work of god, annihilating false Muslims. So that when Shiite Islamists assassinate Sunni citizens trying to go about the normal routine of their lives they are able to exult in their performance pleasing to Allah.

As though the Koran does not teach that life is sacred and that it is incumbent upon all believers to hold it so, and to respect others.

Yet in Baghdad, in a single day, more lives can be lost in terrorist conflict one preying upon the other sect than anywhere else in the world. As tens of thousands of Shia faithful began their annual trek to the Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala, 80 kilometres south of Baghdad, dreadful attacks were unleashed upon them.

In the first attacks close to a dozen bombings and drive-by shootings struck Baghdad, killing about 30 pilgrims. The attacks brought immediate reprisal demands from furious Shiites, just as U.S. soldiers were sweeping through militant Shiite Baghdad districts in an effort to halt Shiite vigilante actions and death squads preying on Sunni Arabs.

Right across Iraq 100 Shia pilgrims met their maker in a number of fanatic bombings. Fourteen Shiites killed in Baghdad as they passed through mostly Sunni districts, as part of a religious ceremonial rite. A double suicide bombing struck down pilgrims in the city of Hilla, between Baghdad and Karbala, as the pilgrims crowded the city centre for water, tea and food that had been set up in a tent for them. Some 77 pilgrims were killed and 127 wounded.

Two car bombs exploded in Baghdad as Shiites chanted in the streets, and 23 were killed. In eastern Baghdad gunmen sprayed a group of Shia pilgrims with bullets, killing one, injuring three. Supporters of Moqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi militia whose presence had previously acted as a deterrent in co-operation with security forces were not to be seen as a result of U.S. pressure on Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki to divorce himself from the group had them melt underground.

Sunni insurgents launched a massive assault on a prison in Ninawa province to free 140 prisoners linked to al-Qaeda. The gunmen, 300 in number, were believed to be connected to the murderous al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq. The Badoosh prison west of Mosul was overwhelmed by the insurgents' use of tear gas and mustard gas on the prison guards allowing the insurgents to take control of the prison.

The catastrophic murder sprees precede the commemoration of Arbaeen where a million Shiite worshippers are expected to converge on Karbala on Saturday. At which time it is entirely possible additional carnage may be anticipated.

In the name of Allah? These murderers who liken themselves to god's avenging angels legitimize their atrocities by blessing their murderous activities with those sacred words, "God is Great".

Allah must be greatly anguished.
