Axis of Evil Tragedy Tour

Baghdad

Al-Qaeda terrorists were responsible for carrying out another devastating attack on Samarra's sacred Askariya shrine. Two explosions took down the shrine's remaining minarets. Iraq has braced itself for an increase in sectarian violence. An earlier attack on the shrine destroyed its golden dome to rubble, and brought about an unending spiral of violence, where hundreds of thousands of Sunnis were driven from their homes in mixed Shi'ite, Sunni communities. Violence in retaliation resulted in thousands of Shi'ite deaths.

Police have reported that the Sunni Grand Mosque in Iskandariya, south of Baghdad, has also been blown up and reduced to bits; utterly destroyed.

Coevals in piety; Shia and Sunni. A Muslim brotherhood. Performing Allah's will. Demonstrating understanding and goodwill, one toward the other.

Gaza Strip

Factional fighting between Fatah and Hamas has finally destroyed the "unity" government of the Palestinian Authority. Gunmen rove freely on the streets, Kalishnakovs aloft, firing jubilantly into the air, toward their enemies, and just incidentally, at hapless citizens.

Since Saturday alone over 60 Palestinians have died in these internecine clashes for power. Over 600 Palestinians have been killed since March 2006 when the Palestinian people, of their free will and determination elected Hamas in a democratic show of choice. Resulting in a divided parliament. Itself resulting in utter chaos.

The unity government is no more. Gaza is now in the hands of Hamas Islamists. Hamas is triumphant, describing the rout as the victory of Islam over secularism. Fatah still has the West Bank. What now for the future of a unified Palestinian state?

Afghanistan

Chechen and Arab Islamists have flooded into southern Afghanistan, the latest hotspot for insurgent Taliban activity against allied forces of NATO and the Afghan army. The area has been transformed into an insurgent "sanctuary".

Arab militants demonstrated solidarity with the Taliban, engaging in fierce combat in the Panjwai district west of Kandahar last year. Al-Qaeda has released videos which it insists show Arabs battling alongside insurgents in Afghanistan.

Iran

"Nuclear energy belongs to the Iranian nation and the Iranian nation will defend this right with their fists in the air", declared Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at a televised rally in Tehran.

In Vienna, Mohamed ElBaradei, the International Atomic Energy Agency chief informed the agency's board of governors that Iran is continuing to expand its covert work. It's reported also by insiders that he believes Iran could achieve 8,000 centrifuges enriching uranium by December.

Woe to the world.
