Battling Terror

Where better to stifle the live-blood of terror groups than in Pakistan, where the cross-roads to Jihad-Central hosts the world-wide web of Islamist intention to destabilize and overturn a world order too beholden to the traditions of Christianity, wedded to liberal democracy, coupled with the depravity of secular society and rampant capitalism.

(On a purely theoretical plane, there is indeed much to find criticism with in the world order, and within that world the voices of critics ring loud and clear.)

Bearing no resemblance whatever to the snarling contention of Islamists that that same world order would be inordinately improved when the pure shining light of Islam, interpreted by the standards of primitive tribal leaders becomes triumphant in ascendance, leading to a new world caliphate.

In the process of which, violent upheavals and bloody slaughters must occur, to cleanse the world. Something like making an omelette; impossible without breaking eggshells.

Pakistan - that crucible of militant fundamentalism in Islam, with its establishment of countless madrassas teaching impressionable young men the importance of defending Islam and surrendering to the demands of its dictates, primarily waging relentless jihad against an alien world of foreign corruption - now seeks to solidify its position as a stalwart defender of the international order.

Pakistani police and the army have exerted themselves to respond to pressure by the United States and Europe, to expunge the country of its secret terror training camps and Islamist militias fomenting violence wherever they can. For it is to these jihadi training camps that young men aspire to converge upon, to be taught to defend Islam, profaned by the infidel and the Jews.

Trainees, completing their courses taught by former army officers to a stringent standard of competence in jihad, fight first in Afghanistan with the Taliban against the allied strength of foreign invaders, then travel back to their countries of origin where they plan further action, as suicide bombers.

The busy agenda of a committed jihadist is compellingly fraught with conviction and intent to commit - slaughter, bloody mayhem, and in the process acquire the respect and honour accruing to a stout defender of Islamic values and imperatives.

India's prime minister pledged to his parliament: "We have to galvanize the international community to deal with the epicentre of terrorism, which is located in Pakistan. We have noted the reported steps taken by Pakistan, but clearly much more needs to be done." Most particularly the dismantling of "the infrastructure of terrorism" in Pakistan.

A condition which Pakistan vehemently denies even exists other than in the febrile minds of its detractors. It bears no responsibility for the breeding, induction and training of terrorists. But there may exist a few isolated groups whose purpose it is to sow discontent and to destabilize other countries. The government does not, after all, have complete control of isolated mountainous tribes and their guests.

Despite which, they did make an effort to round up members of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its fund-raising arm, Jamaat-ud-Dawa, both on the UN's list of terror groups. Not true, not at all, that these groups were formed as proxies for Pakistan's military, to fight for the freedom of Kashmir, trained and armed by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Agency. These slurs on Pakistan's honour are regrettable.

Push too hard, too far, and see what you get. Unless proof positive of their involvement in the Mumbai attacks is presented - and just forget the tangibles with which the attackers were provided, too sophisticated to come from any other source, along with the traced cell phone contacts between the Mumbai-ten and LeT's operations chief - they will not be extradited.

India has the option of assembling its troops on the border, and Pakistan will do the same. Grim, isn't it?
