From Within and Without
The investigation into the Mumbai massacre is bringing to the fore unpalatable truths. Not merely that the government of India has misplaced its obligation of state duty to diligently protect the lives of its citizens, but that it has failed in sufficiently training, arming and girding its protective forces against such dire assaults. An unreasonable lapse of diligence given the numbers of bloody attacks that have taken place in the country over the years.
For a country that wants to instill a sense of trust and acceptance among its various constituents, its Muslim and Hindu demographics, the administration's patent lack of industry in ensuring that peace can prevail, is astounding.
When a Muslim extremist group attacks for the purpose of unsettling the Hindu majority, who will suffer when the finger of blame points unerringly to Muslims and inflamed Hindus then attack the minority Muslims?
And does it take a genius to foresee that an impending peace treaty to be signed by those historical mortal enemies, Pakistan and India, will provoke the ire of fascist minded Islamists whose sensibilities grate at the very idea of peace between the two?
Would it not then be in their best interests to create bloody chaos, to instill fear in the population through massive atrocities? Ensuring the inevitable backlash will imperil any such attempt at peace?
India's security officials and their police and army experts were informed that the country faces direct and ever-expanding threats from Islamist terrorists; not only those from abroad, but also those that are home-grown. It wouldn't take many disaffected, jihad-driven Muslims out of India's population of 150 million to wreak intolerable carnage, after all.
So where was their intelligence; what explanation is there for the fact that despite due warning, and quite explicit warning at that, concerning the Mumbai attack, the police and the army were unprepared, taken by surprise, facing a tiny group of jihadis, better armed than the police and the army, capable of forestalling capture for days, enabling them to get on with their business of uninterrupted murder at leisure.
Now information is released that three Indian Muslims and two Pakistani nationals, all members of LeT were arrested with incriminating evidence. "We can't be sure of their intentions, but all of them were moving to Mumbai with weapons when they were captured", according to Indian authorities. "It clearly reveals the mindset of Lashkar-e-Taiba."
After the fact, yes indeed. And the Indian government has, shamefacedly, admitted their diligence shortcomings. Planning to enhance and advance their security apparatus. Let's hope. Yes?
