Society's Dangerous Dregs

Yet another gruesome murder trial nearing completion. The second trial of principals involved in the horrendous butchery of a family; husband, wife, and eight-year old boy. This was a dreadful event that occurred in Calgary, where a young girl of twelve resisted all of her parents' attempts to protect her from a child's willful and self-destructive devices.

Which parents wouldn't recoil in distaste and fear, discovering that their pre-teen was keeping company with a 23-year-old man?

The girl seethed in anger and resentment and continued to see that young man, although in all likelihood her rejection of her parents' values and concerns for her probably pre-dated her fascination with and partnership with someone twice her age. This was truly a sinister alliance of a cretinous boob and a maliciously psychotic child.

He, a pathetic social outcast seeking his place in a degraded society of other misfits; forlorn, self-pitying, socially antagonistic. A group of counter-cultural outliers finding comfort in one another's company, able to exercise a collective grievance against a society they could find no ease with and whose restrictions and mores they rejected.

But even they were aghast at the trajectory the coupling of the twelve-year-old girl and the 23-year-old man took. When it became evident that the girl's hatred for her controlling parents, as she saw them, developed into a burning desire to accomplish their deaths. To remove them as an impediment to her wishes to become free of their control. To which purpose she wheedled her boyfriend into agreeing to murder them.

It became general knowledge among their group of friends that murder was in the offing, initially because the boyfriend, Jeremy Allan Steinke, attempted to influence a mutual friend to commit murder on their behalf. And was refused. His friends tried to influence him against committing to his girlfriend's wishes. With a compromised level of intellectual maturity he took it as his obligation to fulfill her wishes.

How could these parents, responsible to their children, the 12-year-old girl who was so vituperatively rebellious, and her 8-year-old brother, ever imagine that their child was a viperous psychotic without a normal human complement of love and pity. They would never, in their wildest nightmares, imagine that their child would embark on a mission to have them murdered, and assist in the process, herself.

That their girl would unflinchingly take it upon herself to murder her little brother, having no compunction about inflicting on her frightened, vulnerable sibling wound after lethal wound. At her trial, jurors listened uncomprehendingly to evidence that left no doubt at the level of evil this child easily and readily succumbed to in her personal search for independence.

Now this second trial had a jury of six men and six women tasked with determining whether this man who murdered the mother and father of his young girlfriend, should be found guilty of three counts of first-degree murder - or the lesser offences of second-degree murder, or even of manslaughter.

His lawyer, himself recoiling at the unspeakable crimes, is aware that this man would not be "...walking out of this courtroom. There's no question about that. It's just what the proper verdict should be". Claiming on behalf of his client that the murder of the father and mother resulted from an "impulsive reaction", not having been pre-planned.

Nor, he insists, was his client complicit in the murder of the young boy. Simply there, on the scene, witness to the slaughter of the child. After which he walked into the bathroom of the house, to casually assess a wound he had sustained during the deadly clash with the child's father.
