Feet to the Fire

Well, this is a faith-restoring overture, to be certain. Who might have thought that Jacob Zuma, whose ethics seem at times to be wavering toward the bottom end of the spectrum, is invested with sufficient moral outrage at the ravages that Robert Mugabe has burdened Zimbabwe with, to name the assault on human rights and dignity and demand a change.

The Southern African Development Community doubtless felt they had managed to convince Robert Mugabe to turn away from despotism and the continued ruination of his country when he was prevailed upon to form a power-sharing agreement with Morgan Tsvangerai's Movement for Democratic Change in 2008, when Tsvangerai won the election and Mugabe refused to stand down.

But the Global Political Agreement that Zanu PF agreed to, to turn the broken country around, restore its economic and agricultural base, its humanity and its future, wasn't worth the paper it was signed on. Robert Mugabe simply kept arresting key members of Tsvangerai's choices for ministerial positions, and generally ignored his new prime minister's attempts to stabilize the country.

Doubtless Mugabe felt he would have a smooth ride in swaying the fourteen heads of state at the regional summit in Johannesburg that the country was in good shape and ready for another election. Jacob Zuma tabled his own report, warning that the violence, harassment, hate speech and politically motivated arrests in Zimbabwe must come to a halt.

What violence, harassment, hate speech and arrests? asked Mugabe in innocent shock. To his huge credit Mugabe did not have to wait long for a response from Zuma: "I do not manufacture things, my reports are based on things that are happening in the country, based on facts."

Hallelujah!
