In Their Own Country

Another massacre in Syria.  There are three hundred United Nations truce observers in the country.  They've been there for weeks.  Their presence has done nothing whatever to deter the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad from destroying villages and the people in them.  They are simply refused entry to any targeted site.  And then, once the onslaught is completed and the bloody carnage complete, they may enter.

To report on what they have observed.  And while they may conclude that, from the remnants of artillery fire on the ground they can easily adduce who is responsible, the regime expresses its horror at the inhumanity of the foreign interlopers who have terrorized and slaughtered innocent Syrians who deserve to live in peace in their own country.

Once again, Syrian troops and the loyalist Shabbiha militias have done their work.  Not quite the 108 massacred at Houla, but at least 78 people destroyed, men women and children, at Hazraat al-Qabeer.  The technique is the same, first the military artillery bombardment, then the Shabbiha moves in on the ground to accomplish another atrocity, proving the fierceness of the sectarian antipathies existing in the country.

Hatred so intense and unappeasable that the attackers divorce their minds from viewing their helpless victims as children and women.  Stabbing and piercing them at close range, shooting and destroying lives at will.  And still, China and Russia steadfastly remain in support of the regime, while mouthing unease at the bloodshed and insisting that this represents a strictly internal state matter to be resolved by the state.

Six billion in treasury has been taken out of that state.  Lest it fall into the hands of those undeserving to lay claim to it.  It is possible, since Russia has declared through its stalwart President Putin, no shrinking violet when it comes to state violence, that he is prepared to welcome Bashar al-Assad and offer him amnesty, for that is what it amounts to.

He will be enabled to live like royalty without fear of being brought to account by the ICC, on the avails of his looting of his country's treasury.  The ethnic, religious nuances represented in Syria leading to toxic hatred, distrust, resentment and murderous intent will be exacerbated no matter what transpires.  For revenge and avenging one's honour and clan is imperative in the Middle East.

And nowhere more so than in Syria.  In Syria the Iranian Republican Guard's elite external al Quds unit works alongside Hezbollah to fend off the advances of those in revolt.  In Syria, the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda, though not enamoured of one another, are also present to balance the Sunni equation of the Muslim divide.

Intervention in any meaningful manner by NATO, by the Arab League, and NATO against the express denials of the Security Council will have the effect of sparking the ready tinder of an explosive proxy war that will begin with an internal civil war, and bring the entire geography into conflict.  Basically a sectarian conflict between Shia and Sunni.

Where Iraq will join alongside Iran, where once the two countries were engrossed in a battle each intent on destroying the other.  Where Syria and Hezbollah in Lebanon will round out the Shia side, and the rest of the Arab League will represent the Sunni factions that detest and contest the other representation of Islam.

With Russia and China arming Iran and Syria, and the West arming Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt, a conflagration the extent of which can only be hypothesized may result, to leave the geography a burnt cinder of human failure.
