As Ye Sow...

Hezbollah is a terrorist organization. That much is agreed upon by some countries of the world like Israel, Canada and the United States which list it as such. Other countries distinguish between its "political" wing and its "military" wing, and choose to ingenuously place the Hezbollah "military" wing on a terror-watch list, although Hezbollah leadership scoffs at the very idea of a separation between its branches claiming themselves they are one and the same.

The terrorist group has a number of names, perhaps the most distinguished of which would be 'Party of God'. But there are others: Islamic Jihad, Islamic Jihad for the Liberation of Palestine, Organization of the Oppressed on Earth, Party of God, Revolutionary Justice Organization, The Islamic Resistance.

Hezbollah is a Shia militia, basically; obtaining their training, weapons and funding from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. Military camps in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley and elsewhere in the country teach how to kidnap, conduct targeted assassinations, suicide bombings and general guerrilla warfare. They popularized suicide bombings in the early 980s as an effective tool in their terrorist manual.

They have fully infiltrated Lebanese Shia society from which they derive their support, and which enabled them to become a political partner in the government of Lebanon. Although they now form an inextricable part of the government in Lebanon they maintain a wholly separate militia, refusing to surrender their arms, maintaining secret arms caches, and operating militarily separately from the national military which has inferior training and arms.

And because Hezbollah's leadership has declared its preparedness to fully integrate with the Syrian regime's military in joint actions against the Syrian Sunni uprising, the terrorist group is drawing Lebanon directly into conflict that it would far prefer to avoid. Lebanon suffered a horrendous civil war and has no wish to be drawn back into one again on the coattails of what is occurring in Syria.

But Shia Hezbollah has now engendered the full-on hatred-and-revenge agenda of other terrorist groups now operating within Syria, their Sunni counterparts in terror; Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda affiliates who have flooded into Syria from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Iraq and Somalia to aid the Syrian Sunni rebels battling the regime.

Hezbollah has made Lebanon a living target for the outraged spleen of the Sunnis who now target Hezbollah strongholds of Shia populations within Lebanon. The very manoeuvre of car-bombing that Hezbollah excels at itself, is now destroying Lebanon's Tripoli infrastructure, and its people. What Hezbollah wrought in Qusayr against Sunnis and elsewhere is now coming back to haunt Shia in Tripoli.

Hezbollah is quick to condemn those bombings, part of a "criminal project that aims to sow the seeds of civil strife between the Lebanese and drag them into sectarian and ethnic infighting"; a diagnosis that strictly separates the honourable incursion of a Lebanese militia into Syria, while condemning the predictable pay-back.

And now, in a country with a long and unfortunate familiarity with internecine, tribal and sectarian strife, Lebanese Shia, most of whom are in fact Palestinian in origin living for generations in shabby Palestinian refugee camps which Lebanese have long since despaired of ever ridding themselves of, are being targeted by terrorists.

Terrorism begetting terrorism.
