And Just Incidentally....
In the land of the free and the brave, people are free to make choices, and they do. The estimate of precisely how many Americans have 'gone over to the dark side' is hazy, but the figure that is available is none too alarming, having been spoken of as merely a hundred or so, give or take a single digit, that have chosen of their own free will to leave peace and security and embark instead on adventure! excitement! enduring responsibility toward the Islam of perpetual jihad. This is most unfortunate indeed, for the administration is conflicted over its democratic values that sometimes come into direct conflict with the need to expunge the citizenship of such Americans who have distinguished themselves on the battlefield of jihad by direct focus of determined assassination. Not direct confrontation as per jihadi battling an American soldier, but by means such as silently-directed-from-afar-drones lurking in the skies when the presence of such a one is detected, followed, identified and targeted.
Of course, there are other instances and they can be rather horrific, when young male jihadis, American-born, educated, socialized, but never wrenched from the bosom of Islam with its covert agents of fanaticism lurking about to infiltrate mosques and social meeting places, and above all, prisons, to persuade and induct the faithful that they must remain faithful to their obligations to Islam, the all-encompassing lifestyle religious devotion that spells out concisely how the pious must live and how too they must react to threats against the divine provenance of Koranic verses, provided courtesy of the Prophet Mohammed, lighting up the lives of Muslims.
When those whose fuse has been lit must obey and embrace martyrdom and in the process take with them into the netherworld the lives of those unfaithful to Islam and its precepts, chief among which is the unalloyed worship of Allah, and in dedicating their lives as martyrs to that cherished and beloved spirit, shouting !Allahu Akbar! commit themselves to mass atrocities.
Ten years ago U.S. Marine Wassef Ali Hassoun disappeared out of Camp Fallujah in Iraq. A brief investigation was conducted and he was charged with desertion and theft, returned to Quantico Marine base in Virginia and from there transferred to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina for trial. Now, he is free, his current presence only guessed at. There was, after all, no trial, let alone punishment meted out. He was in the land of the brave and the free, and free to be brave however he saw fit.
A naturalized American born in Lebanon, emigrated with his family in 1999 to Utah where he joined the Marines a few years on as an Arabic translator. When he left his base in Fallujah he took with him his military arms and his Muslim prayer rug, "torn between military loyalty and his Muslim beliefs", according to the Salt Lake Tribune. Americans are nothing, if not forgiving, if they are of the understanding variety.
The internal probe of his absence ascertained that he had undermined intelligence operations through his refusal to translate questions about Islam, balked at appearing belligerent toward suspected jihadi imams and sheiks, and openly threatened to "walk out the front gate and leave". And, surprise, he did. But one apple does not a bushel-full make.
He had earlier informed his colleagues of his support of Hezbollah attacks on Israel. Unit members informed investigators that he was "anti-American", listening to jihad sermons on propaganda CDs, receiving spiritual counseling from Navy Lt. Cmdr. Abuhena Saifulislam, Muslim military chaplain who just happened to be involved with a radical Wahhabist group that was undergoing federal investigation, explained Hoover Institution fellow and journalist, Paul Sperry.
His collegial Marines suspected that a video by Hassoun's Islamist "kidnappers" showing him blindfolded, a sword above his head was staged, the "abduction" a fake collaboration between abductee and abductors. His hostage takers had offered his return in exchange for jihadists (held) in "U.S.-led occupation prisons". A few weeks after walking away from his base, Hassoun walked into the U.S. embassy in Lebanon; his family having enlisted an Islamist group associated with the Muslim Brotherhood to secure his release.
Which later offered the entire family the opportunity to demonstrate just how well they had absorbed the many lessons in capitalist democracy in America by seeking a $1-million book and movie option in Hollywood. The still-fugitive Marine is now said to be residing with family, in Lebanon.
More latterly there was Bowe Bergdahl whom the current U.S. administration feels they had little option but to rescue for the good of his health, in a trade for five high-value Taliban operatives, despite a similar, deliberate abandonment of post. Reports of Bergdahl's renunciation of U.S. citizenship and Islamic conversion are simply rumours that have surfaced, as such rumours tend to do, under such circumstances.
To yet be explored is the descriptions by military personnel who have linked Bergdahl's disappearance with subsequent coordinated attacks by the Taliban on U.S. outposts in Afghanistan. Easily explained, as did Brandon Friedman, U.S. Housing and Urban Development head, who described Bergdahl's military colleagues as "psychopaths".
Former Army psychologist Nidal Hasan spoke of Hassoun to his military supervisors in Power Point presentations, as an example of "workplace violence", represented by Islamophobia. Abu Sufian bin Qumu, suspected as the lead operative in the Benghazi attack was yet another Guantanamo release. It is little details like these that speak of the freedoms to act on one's own conscience that is a hallmark of American democracy.
