Israel Undefended

It is beyond painful to realize that the current (and recent past) administration of the State of Israel is either woefully ignorant of the state of crisis within and without the country or it is just too corrupted to really care. What else could it be classified as other than reckless abandonment of the state of the country when the Israel Defence Forces are in such a state of disarray and mismanagement, underfunded and maladministered that they have lost their former effectiveness and lustre in the minds of the Israeli population and worse, the apprehensions of the vast sea of enemies that surround her.

Instead of sensible, responsible and honest politicians Israel has of late been cursed with individuals who have been readily corruptible, self-serving, inept administrators, aided by self-absorbed parties. Where is the spirit of sacrifice for the public weal, where the perceived need for co-operation, what happened to all the visionaries that guided the State in its formative, infant years?

Flagrant fraud has been visited upon the population. They were left with the impression through past defence successes that they were still immune to defeat by rabidly Jew-hating neighbours. Politicians at the highest level have been besmirched publicly, thanks to an independent judiciary and a national police force still able to perform its duties. Israelis now know how little they can depend upon the honour and selfless motivation of those they have voted to guide them through periods of crisis.

Not only was the war in Lebanon ill-waged throughout the campaign, but the ruling elite were incapable of making informed decisions, of adequately provisioning the IDF whose training pre-invasion of Lebanon in response to Hezbollah's deadly provocations was lacking, but they were also incapable of succouring Israeli citizens in the north when rockets were bombarding them daily and they had to evacuate their towns and homes.

Private industry, appalled at the state of the troops, without adequate equipment and food, stepped into the breach, while government stood by doing not a whole lot. That Israeli soldiers went without provisions as vital as drinking water is not to be believed. That they were forced to forage for food from abandoned Lebanese shops is not to be believed. That protective anti-flak vests were not provided for their safety is mind-boggling.

Emergency monetary assistance from abroad was used to help displaced settlers, not government revenue, not stores set aside for emergency from government coffers. It is not just the Olmert government, but those preceding it, for such a failure in government cannot have occurred over a period of mere months; it is a long-standing neglect of years' duration.

That so many high ranking government officials, from president to prime minister, to former prime ministers and so many others have been charged with crimes ranging from graft to rape, is beyond belief. Israel, what has become of you? You are no longer a light unto the nations, you are now a dim light within your own borders.

Is a failed former prime minister, himself not immune to charges of criminal activity the only spark of light for the future?
