In The News

Temporarily ensconced in the United States, rain has kept us prisoner in the Waterville Valley cottage so we read The Boston Globe, the New York Times, awaiting our opportunity to get out into the great White Mountain range, once the elements have relinquished their temporary dominance.

And plug ourselves also into C-span to have a look at Senate proceedings. There's Senator Arlen Specter pontificating and intensely questioning General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker's bona fides. Will they be presenting reality? Giving a clear picture of what's actually occurring? Or unleashing information they've been bidden to do, giving a politically helping hand to their embattled president?

And Senator Patrick Leahy also, excoriating President Bush's Homeland Security initiatives, its farcical 'accomplishments', victimizing the hapless, doing precious little to enhance actual national security - itself imperilled by the left-hand authorities' activities unwilling to share intelligence with the right-hand agencies. Nice going, fellas. This, in anticipation of the long-awaited Senate testimony to be unleashed the following day.

The inexorable targeting of Canada; reality otherwise - of charging Canada as the weak link on the continent from whence comes terrorists to wreak havoc on the unwary United States. Whereas U.S. intelligence agencies had identified and maintained a truly sloppy vigilance over activities of suspects whom their own immigration authorities had admitted legally into the country.

Suspects who later successfully plied their horrific acts of terror on a populace trusting in the alert professionalism of their protection agencies. Agonizing about domestic funding woes, cut-backs to needed civic infrastructure and agencies because the war in Iraq takes centre-stage in funding, beggaring the U.S. economy.

On the human interest side, a Boston Globe story about a 95-year-old Spanish woman whose blogs draw thousands of intrigued readers and appreciative comments. She writes of what she knows best, reminiscing about the past. Little notes about the state of her ongoing health concerns. Tartly amusing comments on current societal mores and practises. Her reasoned take on current affairs.

And more power to this elderly worthy.
