A Populace Well Served

Let's have that again, the reason why Palestinians learned to trust and love Hamas...? Oh yes, now I remember. Because they're great humanitarians, and care so deeply about the well-being of the people whom they represent. One tends to forget these details. Not that they're inconsequential, but so many events intervene between providing health and education and civic services to a sadly under-served population.

Like the avenging purpose of Hamas as a military force, mightily attempting to reproduce itself in the image of its Shi'ite counterpart in Lebanon, the mighty Hezbollah army beloved of Syria and Iran. The imbalance of the frail Lebanese army countering Hezbollah's armed might is slightly but perhaps only on casual perception, reminiscent of Fatah countering Hamas.

So what's this? A bomb placed outside the Gaza parliament building? Dreadful. How can it conceivably come to this. One-time allies in a coalition government now in a deadlock grip of a struggle to the end. Is nothing sacred? Cannot one trust one's similar-minded adversaries? So all right, armed force overtook political maneuverings in taking over Gaza from Fatah, but for Fatah to resort to blasting Hamas out of existence? Phfah!

Perfidious beyond imagination.

On the other hand, Fatah may simply be responding to the clear humanitarian need of the Gaza Palestinians who are suffering greater deprivation than previously. So much for vows of assistance and the conscience of providence toward those dependent upon the goodwill of Hamas, after all. Yes, yes, Hamas has called for a cease-fire of sorts.

Not, actually, to halt lobbing of rockets and bombs over to the Israel side. But to practise a little restraint. It doesn't take a genius to realize that if you continue bombing border crossings used to convey food, medicine, fuel and basic supplies to a desperately needy populace, that food, medicine, fuel and basic supplies will cease to be delivered.

But, sadly, the message just isn't getting through. Rocket-inebriated terrorists of various Islamist nomenclatures continue to get their highs out of base threats and trilling boasts. One Hamas-affiliated terror group has initiated its "Death Campaign" in an intensification of rocket fire into Israel in celebration of the sacred month of Ramadan.

The armed wing of Hamas is also preparing its own little Ramadan-inspired gifts to be delivered to their neighbour as a delightful symbol of their dedication to the task at hand. And the task at hand is always and ever the annihilation of the State of Israel. A task toward whose dedication intent and action are paramount, surmounting even the pious obligation of the Haj.

Woe betide embattled Israel lest she even imagine the utility of invading Gaza to uproot these war-game-playing heroes. They are prepared, they avow, to defend Gaza against any large-scale incursion: "We will teach the occupation new and painful lessons", according to their spokesman.

All honour to the Prophet. Isn't it written somewhere in the Koran that Ramadan is the time to pepper Israel with incendiary rhetoric and even more incineratory bombs? Mission accomplished.
