Undaunted, He Proceeds
There's the man of the hour, the day, the moment, on the move again. Having entertained his peers and his peers' functionaries, he pursues his agenda undaunted. Not for him to fear the potential of political assassination; he sees himself never as a target, always the fomenter, the planner, the successful, unaccountable executioner. This is one determined man. Confronted by a political peer his manner is respectful, restrained, comradely. Despite all his fulminations to the contrary, causing George W. Bush on their first meeting to declare he could see Putin's soul clear through his eyes, and was comforted with the knowledge that this is a man he could do business with.
Little did he know that he is a neophyte and would-be, an unfortunate hiatus in the respectable machinery of governance, while Vladimir Putin represents the real thing, a politico born, unhampered by lack of vision beyond his immediate needs and desires. Highly resistant to restraint, mindful of his time and his placement, voracious for power and recognition.
Nicolas Sarkozy is a confident, forcefully energetic head of state, rivalling his colleague in competence and determination, and respect due him is offered. Emissaries like Robert Gates and Condoleeza Rice, however accustomed and entitled they have become to other world leaders receiving them with grace and humility, are left cooling their heels, then roundly upbraided.
No amount of polite disagreements and diplomatic coercion, let alone pleas for balanced responsibility will deter Mr. Putin from his course. Nor yet warning from his special services of the potential for a targeted suicide bombing attack should he conduct a state visit to Iran. He is adamant, Russia has much to gain by selling, building and encouraging nuclear sufficiency to that country.
Chancellor Angela Merkel, a sensible and pragmatic world leader will have performed her function as part of the enlightened, civil world cabal attempting to isolate and restrain nuclear ambitions from accessibility on the part of a war-mongering, state-threatening theocratic nation-state, to scant avail.
The status of Kosovo, the anti-missile shield in his near bailiwick, the affronts and scorn Russia has suffered all conspire to ensure that the wall of unaccountability will endure. Chechnya, and the unremitting war that Russia wages there is her nightmare. Iran's is that of the rest of the world.
But wait, perhaps not.
