Up the Whazzoo

The crowds in evangelical-hefty states seem to love the man. He speaks their language. Especially in the deep south where the population remains adamant about the honourable heritage of the Confederate flag, still proudly flying atop the state capital in South Carolina. His words of encouragement to them resonates with their sense of honour, disputing the critics who demand its removal, as a shameful symbol of a racist past.

We tell 'em - you want to tell us what to do with our flag, we'll tell you what to do with the pole." Elegant, diplomatic, precise.

Cleverly sticking it to those unfortunates wedded to political correctness. All those others who feel a genuine sense of disturbance that such an outright symbol of racial superiority remains in public view need not ask for a reimbursement of their entrance fee to the great political showdown now playing on stages across the great U.S.ofA. And coming to a theatre near you. Wait for it.

So very obviously appearing as one of them, U.S. Republican presidential candidate and former Arkansas governor, Mike Huckabee is hitting all the high notes right on cue. They love him; he wows them. These are the folks who cleave to their religion, to the message inherent in this Bible Belt; these are considered to be "values voters", and their votes are extremely valuable to this aspirant.

And it isn't only sensitive Black memories he heckles to great white applause, but others as well: "I think the radical view is to say that we're going to change the definition of marriage so that it can mean two men, two women, a man and three women, a man and a child, a man and animal." There, that says it loud and clear now, doesn't it? And if any feelings are hurt in the process - the Good Lord requires forgiveness be extended.

Not that he's alone in his field, as Mitt Romney is doing his bible-blessed best to give Mr. Huckabee a run on his own considerable investment. But there's Mr. Huckabee, plugging away, hitting all the right notes - denouncing ungodliness, Wall Street greed and political corruption - all the ills that befall society through corporate lobbying. Right on all counts, and still counting.

His supporters wax enthusiastic and fierce in their determination to see this man become the next leader of the most powerful country on earth before whom all others tremble in grave apprehension: "We need to support Mike Huckabee because he is a good man with a good heart, and this is God's country right here."

Right, oh so very right.
