Defiantly Entitled Mugabe

His righteous anger abated, he now assumes once again his imperious place at the helm of his country's dissolution as a viable state. Only he has the considerable ability to lead the country further into disaster, disability and demise. His defenders and supporters are understandably loathe to see him depart; with his departure evaporates their valued lifestyle of bloated plenty at the expense of their impoverished countrymen.

Fear not; after a brief personally devastating recognition that there are some Zimbabweans that actually wish him ill at the very least; gone, gone, gone, he has recovered, brought himself out of self-imposed isolation, the thunder of his anger at rejection channelled once again into the determination of the survivor, the ultimate tyrant. He's back out in front, giving orders, as though nothing has occurred, no popular vote handing an estimable majority to his opponent.

Offices of the Movement for Democratic Change raided. What? did they think they could get away with that kind of political impudence? Challenging Robert Mugabe's authority, his divinely inspired right to govern, as he will? Did they really feel they could intimidate this aging but still potent Lion of Zimbabwe? Not likely; this is the man to whom murder and strife comes easily; his conscience is at rest, and his way is clear.

While it's true that some of his erstwhile admiring supporters have stepped back a trifle, hoping the old murdering demagogue would willingly take refuge elsewhere, he now has made it abundantly clear that their position will not be tolerated. They're in line for being fired - or fired upon; perhaps they will be given the choice. Obviously, they will not be missed by their former champion.

The doubters are said to include some members of his family. Will their lives be forfeit too?

That second round, that runoff election, meant to follow swiftly in case of insubstantial leads leading to a firm majority - it's now being bruited about that should a run-off occur, it may be done say, in three months' time - time to give everyone a breather, a cool-down. Second thoughts. In the words of Zanu-PF's deputy information minister, "Zanu-Pf is ready for a runoff, we are ready for a resulting victory.

"In terms of strategy, we only applied 25% of our energy into this campaign - That (the runoff) is when we are going to unleash the other 75%." Something sinister in that promise. What? 25% of their energy expended in subverting the democratic process, illegally setting up phony poll stations, printing absurdly large numbers of polling tickets? What will 75% energy represent? Unleashing the army on the voting public with pepper spray, stun-guns and grenades?

Official results demonstrate that Morgan Tsvangirai has the majority. Illusions, not reality, obviously. Even the Zimbabwe Election Support Network acknowledged that the statistics had been rigged by Zanu-PF. Rigging a second round, in the opinion of their spokesperson would be "very difficult".

Robert Mugabe demands to loftily disagree.
