That's No Sacrifice, It's Religious Commitment

Oops, Great Britain again. Warring legally with its home-grown jihadists. Taking umbrage at the nerviness of some Brits who've enjoyed all the advantages of growing up British, yet resorting to their heritage of tribe and religion and jihad to bomb the hand that fed them. Failing that, international passengers in transit from Britain to North America; the more the better.

In the process emphasizing their very own commitment to holy jihad by exercising their right to martyrdom. Extending it to include loved ones, a wife, one's children. The family that flies together dies together. A magnificent plot of jihad to blow up international air carriers and all within them, in flight delicto flagrante.

But these men of jihad think big; there are other possibilities; nuclear power stations, oil refineries, skyscrapers. Nothing too ambitious to contemplate, to plan for, to take joy in. There are no innocents to be spared death; they are all Infidels, undeserving of life, enemies of Islam. Crusaders and Jews.

The defendants, so colourfully, exotically named: Abdulla, Ahmed, Ibrahim, Arafat, Waheed, Tanvir, Mohammed, Assad, Umar - how utterly romantic. And so, doubtless, they thought of themselves, a breed apart from the dross and the unadventurous ungodly throngs among whom they lived.

Those whom they sneeringly identified as "interested in drinking, watching EastEnders, complaining about the World Cup." Not like them, with their elevated morals writ deep in the Koran, vowing as they did to "rain terror and destruction", visit "volcanoes of anger and revenge" down upon "non-believers".

All now, however, facing irritated justice, deny they took part in a conspiracy to acts of violence and murder. The "bomb factory" apartment they rented holding materials for liquid-based bombs were simply incidental to their daydreams, certainly not indicative of violent intent.

The videos they filmed merely represented innocent play-acting. The detonators buried in the woods had nothing to do with them. The Crown prosecutor, addressing the jurors, described the lead suspect thusly: "The horizons of Mr. Sarwar in respect of his terrorist ambitions were, we say, limitless."

That is truly outstanding religious commitment.
