Uh Oh, How Impiously Improper

Yes, we know how serious Tehran is about youthful flaunting of an unapproved dress code. We quite realize how dangerous it is for Iranians to protest their lack of free speech in the turgidly religious atmosphere of their theocratic Islamist government. It's truly deplorable that those with the courage to speak out in defiance against the stifling of free association, the freedom to speak one's mind, the absence of a free press; that those arrested on charges of insulting the ruling theocracy face long incarcerations, torture and sometimes death.

Death becomes a very public affair in Iran. Silent onlookers very well understand the reason for public executions. Once witnessed, it's a head-clearing reminder that what has occurred can become one's own future, should one feel disposed to lend a voice to the voiceless. Iran is a country for the pure at heart. Which is why prostitution does not exist in Iran, for no one would be interested in such a grubby exchange of paid-for endearments.

That grotesque insult to Islam is common, however, in countries of the West, as we well know. Rather akin to the incidence of men second-guessing their sexual orientation, and damnably selecting the abomination of male-on-male sexual congress. An unspeakable Western importation that has tainted the purity of Iranian society. Somewhat also like those of the Ba'hai faith who sully Islam by their impious declarations of the commonality of humankind and their pledges of faith in peace.

Should unmarried couples feel compelled to pledge their love for one another by succumbing to the allure of sex, their indiscretions will be unveiled for all to know, and they will be severely punished. Should a woman be sufficiently indiscreet to tempt an innocent man by her inviting demeanor, her degraded mode of dress, she has no defence against rape, for how could it be an act of brute force to have sex with a woman who flouts the rules and invites it? She will pay dearly for her act of defiance in luring defenceless men, then crying rape.

Young men and women entering the realm of tempting adulthood and seeking to celebrate their position there, may not touch one another. To dance, as in the manner of the West, is anathema, and should any be caught succumbing to such immoral temptations they will be flogged, and then flogged once more, to ensure they do not forget what punishment awaits the unwary. But such slight acts of social defiance are as nothing in comparison to university students advocating for democracy.

Their long jail terms leave them sufficient time to ponder the downside of democracy, for wishing it has led them to imprisonment and other, reasonable punishments. In advocating for a foreign, and much-despised mode of governance acknowledged as inimical to the strictures of the Koran and the fundamental guidelines of the Ayatollahs, they have committed the ultimate sin of offering insult to Islam and to its officiating mentors of the public weal. Long may they languish in dark, dank cells bereft of the light of the sun.

But wait! It seems that yet another one of the dread diseases born of democracy and Western imperialism is tainting Iranian society. A crackdown has been imposed upon those perfidious few who practise prostitution - despite a ban on buying and selling sex - even though it does not exist in Iran. On the way to punishing prostitutes with a view to protecting frail male sensitivities, countless young woman are detained for their violation of Islamic dress codes. Which should handily cure them of the conceit of wearing head scarves in a deliberately provocative manner.

Tehran's fearless, doughty police chief has been outdoing himself in ensuring his troops enforce the blight of immodest women; they're summarily arrested, as their just due. Moreover, he has taken full control of the crackdown against prostitution in the most courageous manner. First, he has sought to assure himself personally that such an affront to Islam and modest womankind exists, to begin with. Then, having assured himself that some women are indeed engaged in this behaviour mocking of Islam's behest for modesty and purity, he has chosen to sacrifice himself personally for the greater good of the country.

Police Chief, General Reza Zarei, has manipulated his own arrest. He instructed his men to discover his dalliance at an underground brothel. There, while disporting heartily with six naked prostitutes, he stood tall and righteous, denouncing the wicked excesses of the West. Declaiming piously that he has proven his point, and now he could be led away as a piously willing martyr, a proud example to any others who might consider doing likewise. For the good of the country.

General Zarei has proclaimed himself very well satisfied with his sacrificial feint. Having gone one better than all those deluded martyrs ascending heavenward to partake of the delights of numerous virginal maidens, all 70 assigned to each and every one. He, after all, had no need of such an effete display of piety - no need to prove himself worthy, for he was, to his very marrow, entitled to the taste-test and in the doing proved his moral clarity.

Persian-style.
