More Violence And Blood ... Will Flow
"Where was international justice during the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, the bombing of Gaza and the crimes committed in the prisons of Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib?" Sudan's president wants to know. Who knew, good man, that there was a role for international justice in those unfortunate events. Now that we've been apprised of that need, most certainly they will be seen to.In the meantime, are you prepared to submit to the offices of the International Criminal Court to face charges of crimes against humanity? The scale of your offences against humanity are quite simply not to be compared to the issues you have so kindly brought to our attention. For it was under your direct instruction that over 200,000 people in Darfur have been summarily eradicated; murdered, you see.
And close to two and a half million people desperate to escape the wholesale atrocities, the mass murders, the rapes, the pillaging, that have become internally displaced, also a matter laid at your feet. For it was yourself, General Omar al-Bashir, who "masterminded and implemented a plan to destroy in substantial part" the three ethnic black tribes who so irritated your regime.
There are, in total, three counts of genocide, five of crimes against humanity, and two of murder being levelled against you. Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the International Criminal Court prosecutor for Darfur, has insisted, "Bashir organized the destitution, insecurity and harassment of the survivors"; those huddled in refugee camps, in fear and distress.
And he charges further, "He did not need bullets. He used other weapons - rapes, hunger, and fear - as efficient, but silent. Those are not just formal words. He used the whole state apparatus. He used the army; he enrolled the milita/janjaweed. They all report to him. They all obey him. His control is absolute. I don't have the luxury to look away. I have the evidence."
Sounds unspeakably horrible. Have you a response? The world waits with bated breath.
So where does the buck, as that colloquialism goes, stop, Mr. al-Bashir? Ah, of course, peace will be imperilled if you are held to this unfortunate accounting. You might decide to torment further the international aid agencies attempting to succour and feed and protect the displaced? Stop humanitarian aid? Target the African Union peacekeepers?
Yes, we quite see your point.
