Freedom to Disseminate

There is never one side to any story. There are always two versions of everything; each individual represented by an occurrence has his own version of what had occurred. We are all, in the end, subjective, self-interested, self-justifying, self-protective. And this extends from the individual to the group. But then there is also such a thing as evidence, examples and realities that sometimes serve to balance an event more heavily on the side of one receptor than the other.

If there are witnesses to an event, or material evidence that can be presented, as in a trial for example, then the narrative of one derives a greater measure of belief over the other who has lost the advantage of presenting his version one-on-one, with his adversary. In Canada now, as is occurring throughout the world, there are two adversaries, broadly speaking. The world has assembled itself in two camps; Western democracy as opposed to Islamist fundamentalism.

It's far more complex than that, since it is not only Western liberal democracies that are aligned against the fierce fanatical jihadists who espouse a version of Islam that is so antithetical to that which the billion and more Muslims around the world recognize as their faith. But for the interests of clarity, and setting aside for the sake of this argument, the unassailable fact that Islam has suffered greatly through Islamist jihad, we argue West versus Jihad.

It seems, on the evidence, that international figures aligned with anti-Islamism - as opposed to those who, though denying a direct link with Islamist jihadism, still support those whose agenda is clearly anti-West and pro-Islamist - are favoured in gaining entry to Canada. There is a fairly clear unwillingness on the part of government to permit entry for speaking engagements to Islamist supporters.

As a sovereign country Canada has the right to deny entry to those whom it identifies as having a political agenda that is clearly antithetical to the interests of the country. This goes against the grain of freedoms guaranteed in Canada, freedoms of association, of speech, of religion, to favour one over the other, its critics argue. And suppose it does?

Do we really have a social obligation to permit entry to those who fulminate against us, insult us, viciously decry our policies and seek to foment racial division among us? Is there really a fair comparison to be made between an individual who has suffered debasement and degradation and who has seen relatives murdered at the hands of Islamists and who now works tirelessly to relate those experiences to the public, and those who, at a remove, condemn and denounce those who decry Islamism?

Fanatical Islam has imposed itself on the world stage in an ambitious, unmistakably heinous agenda to murder in the name of Islam. Insisting that to conduct jihad is a moral, religious obligation and those Muslims who do not agree and will not engage, are apostates. Islamist jihad has victimized countless Muslims, and extends its death cult to the world of the West when opportunities occur.

These are real events, horrendous atrocities that play themselves out each and every day around the world with deadly assaults against civilians by ardent jihadists eager to martyr themselves to the cause of imperial Islamism. When Canada decides to disallow entry to individuals who have distinguished themselves by having encouraged young Muslim men to wage violent jihad, it wisely defends itself.

The freedom to enter the country to speak publicly on the dangers inherent in ignoring the stealthy ascent of Islamism, the installation of covert war-mongers, the corruption wrought in the minds of impressionable young Muslims by seemingly respected clerics seeking to introduce the young to interpretations of the Koran demanding and conscripting them to violent jihad, represents another instance of self-defence.

Recent history and real-time events well detailed each and every day alert us to the fragility of the state of the world. We do well to remain on guard.
