Bad People
Terror strikes again. No, not jihadist terror squads, not quite, but close enough. Yet another courageous - and perhaps foolhardy, given past political assassinations - critic of the errant politics of convenience, the brutal suppression of dissent and insurrection exercised by Russia, has been exorcised. Excised. Assassinated. Extinguished. With total impunity. One after another, investigative journalists, human rights activists, former KBG officers who dare to point fingers and publish controversial facts have been eliminated. And now yet another. And Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has "expressed indignation at this murder", taken steps to order a top-level investigation. As for Mr. Putin, he awaits opportunity to make an appropriate response. In the end, like the official state investigation into the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, the result will be the quasi-identification of the possible murderer, and then the total exoneration of officialdom.
Yet another unfortunate event, in the annals of journalistic endeavours to reveal truth and condemn viciously vengeful authority figures. Not the elite authority figures, mind, just some incidental hangers-on who took it unto themselves to wreak revenge on traitors of the state, critics of the administration. Such is the ongoing search for justice in an unjust world.
This assassination is one accredited to Vladimir Putin's choice of president for Chechnya, a callow, youthful figure who strides Chechnya as its tribal leader, one who officiates an Islamist republic that will no longer agitate for complete separation from Russia. "Ramzan Kadyrov is responsible, not only because he leads Chechnya", claimed the director of the human rights group whom the now dearly-departed Natalya Estemirova worked for.
"He threatened Natalya, told her that her hands would be covered in blood and that he destroys bad people. We didn't say this before because we were scared for her safety." Rest assured, no reason to continue to be fearful, for this unfortunate occurrence had nothing whatever to do with President Kadyrov, for he himself condemned the "inhuman" murder of his nemesis.
Moreover, President Kadyrov stated unequivocally that he is no male chauvinist; he does not stoop to "kill women". On the other hand, Natalya Estemirova, like Anna Politkovskaya in 2006, held a press conference calling for Mr. Putin's prosecution before an international criminal court. Prime Minister Putin too does not stoop so low.
