Nobility Oblige
What happens when an individual appears to arise out of virtually nowhere, and becomes a cause celebre of his own? Why we have a fount of words and wishes tumbling from the mouth of a modern-day wizard, a scholar, a wise man, who prophesies that those who can, will. The will to succeed, to have hope for the future requires a propellant, and none is more successful than the man of charisma who charges forward and declares that all is not lost, there is yet time and opportunity to rescue ourselves from the abyss. When humankind is at its collective lowest ebb, reeling under the insalubrious effect of global climate suddenly gone berserk, of rogue and totalitarian states insistent on threatening the stability of nations around them, when tropical diseases wend their destructive way throughout the world causing the uproar of uncertainty about pandemics without surcease, when the very Earth itself rises up in anguished roars swallowing buildings and the people therein, and angry giant waves wash people out into the oceans, we seek a universal messiah.
And there came one to whom the people responded with great roars of approval. And from his mouth issued the aspirations to collectively save ourselves from the ever-widening chasm of looming, leering disaster. The man succeeded to the premier place of the premier nation on Earth, and other nations' citizens stood up and acclaimed him as their leader, too. Yes, he said, we can do this together, all of us, people of good hearts and intentions, we can overturn adversity and welcome the accommodation of cousin-hood. For we are one on the face of this Earth.
And then did he extend the hand of friendship, of companionship and of obliging assistance to all, in his generous embrace. Unflinching, even in the event of those who turned their backs on him with unappreciative scorn. He will be their champion nonetheless, just as he champions those who revere him. His kind kingship in this secular world of confused beings caught in an endless cycle of self-destruction will lift us all onto another plane altogether, of compassionate co-existence.
We wait, mouth agape. Or is that with agape? For this breathless moment in time, there must be a universally-acknowledged award that will forever sanctify this man's courage and determination to take us willing, and unwilling to a world of peace and utter rejection of turmoil, of war, of self-destruction. There is no finer aspiration, and although many have aspired before him, it has been left to Barack Obama to succeed.
And with that premise - the Nobel Prize for Peace!
