Primitive Tribalism vs Civilization
That's the most evident difference in the orientation one perceives from the standoff between the State of Israel and the Palestinian Authority, including Gaza. A pallid, stick-thin, obviously malnourished, sensory-deprived prisoner who for five years had been kept in solitary confinement without needed medical attention, a frail young man conscripted by his country to do military duty released in exchange for over a thousand violent prisoners.Prisoners who have been well fed and exercised, who have been permitted outside contact and communication with their families, and some of whom have been given educational opportunities while in incarceration, released back to the outside world of dedicated battle against the state that apprehended them after they committed their attacks. Who, on their release, re-commit to murder. Absurdly, profoundly irrational.
This is tribalism at its most deadly and most primal. The ancient survival mode that territorial imperative instructs to violence. Where civil people make accommodation toward others' needs, the primitives seek to slaughter and re-take that which they claim by vengeful and forceful means. Denying the possibility that others have legitimate claims to a portion of what they cling to solely for themselves.
"The people want a new Gilad!" they chant in unison, in their jubilant thousands. One nation's values expressed in the desire to rescue a single young man in exchange for 1027 convicted terrorists and murderers. That imbalance more than adequately reflects the lack of equilibrium in the deadly contest of vicious endurance between two peoples, two nations.
The triumphalism of outlasting, outmanoeuvring, outsmarting 'the enemy' by the realization of the value they place in a single life, considering that single life worth a thousand others. Even while it is well understood that the release of that thousand others will inevitably result in an ongoing slaughter, as the released return to their psychopathic 'resistance'.
Resistance trumps communicating and making accommodation toward reasonable talks that could result in a mutual agreement for peace and conciliation. Impossible to achieve as long as unrecalcitrant pre-conditions are not met, with the realization that those insisting on those pre-conditions do so for a reason; to ensure that peace talks will not commence.
"Negotiation based on power forces the enemy to pay the price. We have defeated the Israelis", Hamas lauds itself and its humanity-scorching techniques. Their inhumane treatment of a single, frail soldier who dutifully sought to protect his country, against the coerced blackmail that resulted in the freeing from prison custody of dedicated slaughterers.
Evil defeating the will to exist. And Fatah, the 'moderate' Palestinian faction, welcoming back their 'heroes', what about their far more acceptable curtsies to human rights and obligations...? "You will see the results of your struggle in the independent state, with its capital Jerusalem." Jews, needless to say, have no historical, heritage claim to Jerusalem.
While Gilad Shalit, weak and nauseated, wan and manipulated by Hamas still standing guard over him while in an Egyptian television studio being interviewed, attempting to focus on questions put to him, answers diplomatically that he would defend the release of additional prisoners, if they surrendered their ambition to slaughter Israelis, a released Palestinian has another kind of personal story.
"I did what I did in defence of my nation and children and have no regrets at all. I was kidnapped from my children and spent a decade in prison", said 34-year-old released Palestinian prisoner, Qahera Assadi, jailed for assisting an Islamic Jihad suicide bomber.
