The Universe Is Not Unfolding...As Planned

Who, exactly, do Russian citizens think they are? Insisting that they have the right as citizens to gather without a permit from the Kremlin, to express their irate, insulted disaffection with the manner in which this latest election has been abducted by President ... oops ... Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Russia, it would appear, is not quite as united in support of his indefinite-into-the-future reign of autocracy as United Russia granted.

Taking inspiration either from the "Arab Spring" that has fizzled into the Arab Winter, or perhaps even the Occupy Wall Street movement that has been transmogrified globally simply into the Occupy of the world's discontented and ill-done-by, an inordinate, insubordinate and unruly number of Russian citizens - again, mostly manifested by the young, disappointed hopefuls of the country - burdened the streets with their protests.

What have they to protest about? Fraud, corruption, they've seen it all before, so what's gnu? Ah, calls for an end to Vladimir Putin's prospects to indefinitely lead Russia. There's their comeuppance...being rushed by the police, and many detained and imprisoned. Again: who do they think they are? The protesters that is, not the authorities. They know who they are.

James Hill for The New York Times Police took away opposition supporters in Triumfalnaya Square in central Moscow on Tuesday.

Little good it did them to bang their tin drums furiously and shout resoundingly "Russia without Putin!" Which, admittedly, is a refreshing change from the protests taking place elsewhere, in the Arab world of hugely dissenting chaos where shouts of "Death to America!" and "Death to Israel!" resound ear-splittingly in the atmosphere of social anarchy and political change; not always in reflection of the protesters are aiming for.

Remember that old adage that insists on impudently showing up everywhere in living colour: Be careful what you wish for...?
