Assad, the Enemy of God

"All this points to a state of confusion and lack of confidence at the leadership level.  It shows they don't have security in the capital under control."  Mohammed Saeed, Syria-based opposition activist

Well, imagine that.  Security in Damascus is uncertain.  Hardly a surprising conclusion given that a month earlier a rebel bombing mission of the state security headquarters in an extremely 'secure' area of the city, in 'secure' buildings, took place.  Killing four of the regime's most important security and military officials, including President al-Assad's brother-in-law.

And the same blast severely injured President al-Assad's feared brother Maher, who lost a leg in the unfortunate incident.  There are not many in the country who will mourn the misfortune that befell Maher al-Assad, his death squads and their bloody massacres have not endeared him to the majority Sunni Syrian population, civilians and rebels alike.

But the new crescent moon marked the end of the month-long holy fasting of Ramadan.  And prayers in the country's mosques commenced for Eid al-Fitre, the following three-day holiday.  During which time pious Muslims follow the tradition of visiting graves, reciting prayers for the dead.  There are many graves to visit, and the droning of a multitude of prayers in Syria on this occasion.

And there well may be many more before too long.  Among them the worshippers at a mosque in the al-Zahera district of Damascus who were videoed passionately shouting: "There is no God but Allah", and "Assad is the enemy of God", while clapping hands.  "May God protect the Free Syrian Army" they shouted also.  Surely sealing their fate. The video posted for view by any who may be interested.

Most surely the regime will be interested.  Without doubt they will identify the mosque, those at prayer, and seek to change their minds, good loyal Syrians as they are.  There is nothing to quite fix the mind toward a new direction of allegiance as the threat of military bombardment.  With the result being, needless to say, many new graves having to be prepared for those meeting misfortune.

Syrians embrace their faith with a passion, and no less does their president.  They have evidence of the piety of their president, since the Syrian state TV broadcast video footage of President al-Assad praying at the Damascus Rihab al-Hamad mosque in the district close to the presidential palace.  Syrians will be delighted to glimpse a brief video of their president; he has been silent and absent since the bombing.

That he is hale and well will be a great relief to his loyal subjects.
