July 22 Commission
What glaring incompetence. Not at all a confident, reliable and professional national police force, as the picture further emerges of gross inefficiency and utter lack of professionalism at every level of law enforcement in Norway. Response to a high-level emergency on a semi-isolated island was absolutely nil. Even when private agencies offered assistance, despite the desperation of the situation, Norwegian security authorities failed to grasp the need, and refused help. This is a country that exhibits a distinctive kind of condemnation of a democracy in the Middle East which has always had to counter extremism and terrorism and mass murder. In the process developing out of dire need a professional security system and a police and a military geared to apprehending terror when and as it rears its bloody head.
Thanks to Norway's numerous errant decisions, their blundering incapability, one single, well-armed and extremely well-rehearsed psychopath was enabled to carry out an improbable plan to slaughter as many young people whom he believed were the future downfall of his country, as possible. Fanatics come in many colours and many delusions, and every society has a share of them.
On Utoya Island, where a youth camp with political undertones welcomed bright and intelligent young people to share their convictions and a pleasurable summer encounter with nature, panic and gore replaced a commune with nature. Desperate young people attempted to save themselves, some drowning in the process of removing themselves from the sights of Anders Behring Breivik's deadly sharp-shooting skills.
"The nationwide message service failed seriously", the commission chairwoman Alexandra Bech Gjorv stated. The independent inquest into the mass killings where three people were blown up in downtown Oslo and 69 horribly deprived of life at a scene of depraved madness where there was no escape from the indomitable will of a pathological hater, ended up deploring the failures of security forces.
Norway's internal intelligence service had been informed by customs officials months before the attacks that Anders Breivik had bought bomb-making chemicals from Poland. Someone must have tucked that information safely away in a filing cabinet, locked it and walked away with full self-confidence. Once the bombing in Oslo occurred, there appeared to be no attempt to divine what else might be occurring.
Vigilance was absent. Every level of law enforcement in Norway was condemned by the inquest of the panel of the July 22 commission. Failure, utter ignominy. Anders Behring Brievik acted out of love for his country; he acted to save Norway from multiculturalism. And the solution to save the country was to slaughter 69 of the country's best and brightest.
Utterly sane. As he passionately claims.
