Survival of the Fittest

"We condemn human rights violations by any party.  Anyone committing atrocities should be held to account", stated Victoria Nuland, U.S. State Department spokeswoman.  What a disappointment, what a surprise.

The world can hardly contain its amazement that vicious brutality is being visited by each side of the Syrian revolt-and-response; the Alawite regime of Bashar al-Assad as determined to preserve their sovereign control and hegemony as the Sunni-rebel-led insurrection is to thwart those plans of the minority Shia and install their own sectarian interests instead.

Both emanate from the very same source.  They are all the inheritors of the same brutally tribal Bedouin crucible, socially locked into a limbic, primitive collective culture of survival.  And if, in contesting one another in violence they each make full use of murderously unrestrained assaults that strain the limits of civil expectations of 21st Century combatants, they at least are being compulsively honest, while the Western interests looking on in horror are simply deluding themselves.

For the Syrians, as it is with all those who live in the religion-straitened geography of the Middle East, survival is all too often dependent on one's ability to counter the murderous assaults of an historical enemy, where deep-rooted hostilities based on tribal affiliation and sectarian faith inform society at every level.  The civilizing sensitivities of modern enlightenment appear to have side-stepped the notice of those completely wedded to heritage and tradition.

Religious strife is so deeply engrained that what should be considered protected from sacrilege is not, as Sunni and Shia each do not hesitate to bomb the others' mosques, since they are, after all, not legitimately Islamic, but more aptly fundamentally insulting to pure Islam.  To Sunni, Shia are degenerate apostates, and to Shia the Sunni represent a corruption of the true meaning of Islamic precepts, culture, tradition.  Lineage is so vital.

The entirely absurd declaration that at this stage "there may not be anybody with entirely clean hands", expressed by head of the rights group Amnesty International, only betrays her own unfamiliarity and naivete relating to the people of the Middle East, who worship their brand of the One True God and who brook no interference, in any event, with their newly resurrected striving to restore Islam to the glory of its re-imposition on the non-believing world of apostates and infidels.

And here is the world of the West, scratching its rationality-based intelligence for solutions to an Islamist-sourced problem of denial, rage and revenge at a level that defies human understanding other than to understand that a collective delusion of God-based and -sourced supremacy has completely absorbed human intelligence into the sphere of human emotion gone amok, leaving no room for human relations in the pure rage of hateful violence.

"These are Assad's dogs" growled one of the rebels who might or might not have represented Jabhat al-Nusra, an Islamist al-Qaeda knock-off, becoming weary of inflicting pain and anguish, and finally resorting to the finality of death.  And in their turn, Assad's dogs will have more than ample opportunity to return the compliment in spades, sparing neither the elderly nor the young in their zeal to preserve themselves.
