Cry Me A River : Choices and Consequences
"We're terrified by what is happening. The West [including Canada] are effectively handing Jack and the other detainees back to ISIS, when the Canadians could simply ask the Americans or the British to take him into custody ..."
"Perhaps this is the UK-Canadian way of dealing with the detainees -- let those who are not fanatic be killed by ISIS so that the West doesn't have to deal with them."
John Letts, dual Canadian-British citizen
"Everyone knows how Assad treats prisoners -- tortures and kills them and gouges their eyes out."
"Jack is innocent of any crime, was not a fighter in Syria, opposed [ISIL] and is being held without charge on trial."
"We need him to be rescued by the Canadian government."
Sally Lane, dual Canadian-British citizen

Why fault an adventure-seeking young man for answering the call to join the melee in a foreign country when life was so boring in Britain that the siren call of excitement and action and forbidden psychopathic threats to the world at large while the human rights of minority groups unfortunate enough to be living in the path of an extending caliphate horrified the sane world with slick videos of torture and death, motivated a convert to Islam to immerse himself in the carnage-filled atmosphere?
He even indulged in his own version of spreading fear with online promises to commit violence against British troops engaged in battle with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, Jack Letts' favoured group on the path to restoring the Medieval-era glories of Islamist conquest. Life was good back then for Jack Letts, envisioning himself a warrior of fundamentalist Islam for whom Sharia law represented the finest aspirations of humankind elevated to an exacting degree of faith in Allah.
And what profession of faith could be more profound than dedication to providing sacrifices to appease the demands of a jealous god whose instructions to the faithful is to destroy the lives of all those refusing to surrender to his ineffable will as the only true god, whose detractors deserve death? Not merely death but personal extinction of the most gruesome imaginable that a degraded human mind could devise, so proud of committing such a sacrilege against the sanctity of life that it must be recorded and posted online to be shared everywhere.
With pride by those eager to support the death cult of Islamist jihad, and dread by those whose humane instincts shrink with revulsion from the very thought that human beings could find pleasure in such unabashed cruelty imposed upon hapless victims forced to witness their own agonizing death throes after those of their comrades. None of this was any secret in the vile distribution of the exploits of their death squads for all to see. And Jack Letts would have been as aware of the self-touted industry of death as anyone else, and he steered his course directly toward it.

Captured by the victorious challengers to Islamic State supremacy, the valiant Kurds, the man whom the British media dubbed 'Jihadi Jack' for obvious reasons, mouldered for several years in Kurdish-guarded prisons for ISIS terrorists. The Kurds, anticipating that Europe would claim its own and relieve the Kurdish guards of their burden, saw the West refusing to take back their own, while the East quietly extracted them from the prisons to return them from whence they came, and due justice.
The United Kingdom relinquished all responsibility for the British subjects who chose Islamic State's murderous exploits over civilizational mores and withdrew citizenship from their jihadist members. Since Jack Letts, though he never lived in Canada, had dual citizenship given his parents' status with both countries, he was left with Canadian citizenship. And Canada has made no moves to repatriate its own, to hold them for crimes against humanity, citing lack of hard evidence acceptable by a court of justice.
Now his parents beseech Canada to do what Britain refused. Their fear is that hardcore members of Islamic State, which they claims their innocent son is not, will exact vengeance of their son in retribution for his disowning his own role with the terrorist group. In appealing to official Canada, the Department of Foreign Affairs responded that it had requested of Turkey that it handle any Canadians detained by them, according to international law, as it busies itself with its goal of exterminating Kurds from the border area between Syria and Turkey.
To the parents of this ISIS stalwart, Foreign Affairs emphasizes its inability to provide consular service as the region is in violent turmoil, even as a spokesman for the Canadian public safety minister reiterated a phrase heard previously, that "there is no legal obligation to facilitate" return of any Canadians detained as accomplices to Islamic State in Syria, and that anyone who left Canada for the express purpose of joining ISIL "Must be held accountable and bear the consequences of their actions".
As it appears, on the evidence of a photograph, 'Jihadi Jack' is doing at the present time.
