The Case for Recognition by Canada of Palestinian Statehood
"[Canada recognizing Palestinian statement] at this time [would be a] grave mistake.""Such a step would amount to an unconscionable reward for the heinous Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 -- an attack marked by mass murder and the brutal kidnapping of innocent civilians, including Canadian citizens.""Rather than advancing peace, it would legitimize violence and severely undermine international efforts to restore stability and security in the region."Embassy of Israel in Canada"[Recognition would] set in stone for Canadians he rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination.""Accountability means everything to the Palestinian people. That's all we are looking for.""Canada could have done better and must do better.""We’ve been very close, before the [April federal] election, to the recognition.""We’ve seen stronger, clearer statements since the Carney government took office. There is less two sides-ism, less not naming the perpetrator of the crime.""[Comments Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand made in May describing Israel’s military campaign as] aggression caused against the Palestinian and the Gazan people in Palestine. [Citing] Palestine [rather than the Palestinian territories]."Mona Abuamara, chief representative, Palestinian General Delegation to Canada"Can there be a lasting peace in the Middle East without peace in Gaza, that takes into account Gaza and West Bank and effectively working on a path to a Palestinian State?""I would agree with all of those. [Palestinians] living side by side in security Israel -- a Zionist, if you will, Palestinian state that recognizes the right of Israel not just to exist, but to prosper and not live in fear -- we can't have peace unless we move towards that."Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney

According to Ms. Abuamara, talks with other countries, recently one between Canada, Qatar and Mexico, help to move Canada toward recognition of Palestinian statehood. She anticipates talks continuing with the re-scheduling of the cancelled United Nations conference to be organized by France and Saudi Arabia. With the conference in session, she feels, conversations on how that goal might be achieved will commence.
It's difficult to square her remarks on the importance of 'accountability' to the Palestinian people, when she appears incapable of addressing the issue of ongoing violent attacks by her people, with its leaders inciting Palestinians to violent actions against Israel and its people, but referring to Israel as the enemy and the perpetrator of violence against Palestinians, apparently with no reason other than the inconsequential need to protect Israelis from constant lethal attacks by those who identify themselves as victims.
She had informed The Canadian Press of her impression that Canada is moving closer to formal recognition of Palestinian statehood. Her role as representative in Canada since 2021 is to promote and tighten relations between Palestinians and Canada. Her four-year appointment was at the pleasure of a government that controls the West Bank, not the Gaza Strip.
She has recently commended Canada for its use of late of "tougher language". she is absorbed in her pursuit of convincing the Canadian government to take a harsher stance on Israel's actions in Gaza. In May of 2024 the federal government under the Liberal rein of prime minister Justin Trudeau stated it is "prepared to recognize a Palestinian state at the time most conducive to lasting peace, not necessarily as the last step along the path to achieving the two-state solution".
For its part, Israel has pushed back firmly on Palestinian statehood calls from within the international community, stating the obvious that seems to elude those attempting to make a case for Palestinian statehood, that the territories have divided leadership and Hamas and Fatah both operate corrupt governments, refusing to hold elections. Most tellingly, both have supported
terrorists.
"I think Palestinians should have all the powers to govern themselves, but none of the powers to threaten us and that means that certain powers, like overall security, will always remain in our hands.""After October 7th, people said the Palestinians have a state, a Hamas state in Gaza, and look what they did with it.""They didn't build it up. They built down into bunkers, into terror tunnels after which they massacred our people.""So people aren't likely to say, 'Let's just give them another state'. It'll be a platform to destroy Israel."Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
