Border Restrictions
It never stops, it grinds on and on and on. Attacks from the Gaza Strip into Israel, targeting the civilian Israeli population, and then when Israel retaliates a hue and cry is set up, claiming that the occupiers are bent on genocide. The international community has revealed a lop-sided understanding of causation, and holds Israel to a standard of fortitude and sacrifice not expected from any other nation on earth. The Palestinian cause has been embraced as the golden measure of the world's compassion toward the downtrodden, the dispossessed, the ultimate victim. And the Palestinians' insistence that they be recognized as the world's sole refugee population worthy of a special United Nations designated support organization to maintain their material needs for a half-century and more has made of them a cause celebre.
No matter the initial adamant refusal to share a small piece of the Middle East geography. No matter the combined Arab countries' plan to ensure that this festering refugee population not be absorbed, but remain an open sore. Its short- and long-term goal the elimination of the State of Israel - the pathetic plight of the Palestinians remaining the focal point of world opinion.
As economically supported refugees the Palestinians saw no need to set about the task of setting in place civil infrastructures that would pave the way for independence. Reliance on international hand-outs, and skillfully presenting the theatrics of victimhood ensured their grievances would eventually result in a culture of victim=grievance=revenge. Now, they will give no quarter.
In place of energizing themselves to produce a working community determined to advance itself as responsible citizens of the world, eschewing interminable hand-outs in favour of forging a nascent nation of their own with functioning agricultural communities, business communities, institutes of education, a universal health system, a national constitution, legal system and working government, they chose to languish, refugees, under the kindly auspices of the United Nations.
Stealthily working, all the while, to undermine their neighbour, destabilize the national institutions of the country, provoke the military to take protective action against ongoing violent incursions amid clashes with the justice system of the country they sought so vigorously to destroy. Their internal factionalization, disagreements, self-loathing ensured no communal responsibility.
Yet the world will not hold them accountable for their violent behaviour, blaming Israel instead, for asserting herself to dominate this poor repressed people. Their inability to rouse themselves from bitterness and strife has resulted in a population under stress, unable to advance toward hope for a country of their own. Instead they have a multitude of violent militias, all claiming love for the Palestinian people and hatred for Jews.
The mindset and orientation is so utterly warped that groups such as Islamic Jihad, Mujahedin Brigades, Popular Resistance Committees, Hamas, Fatah, Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades - to name a few - all trip over one another in their anxiety to prove that they are responsible for the latest violent outrages against "the occupier", a country with whom the Palestinian Authority is purportedly determined to hold peace talks.
Attackers from these groups constantly prey on Israeli citizens, and occasionally successfully murder them. Hoping from time to time, to be able to capture and abduct members of the Israeli Defence Forces to use as prisoner bargaining chips, and to eat away at the potential for peace. The latest raid from the Gaza Strip on a fuel depot that killed two Israelis is sordidly absurd beyond comprehension.
For it is from that very fuel depot that much of the fuel that comprises a vital energy lifeline for Gazans emanates. Israel, despite the constant attacks against her, continues to commit to the humanitarian supply of material assistance to Gaza. Truckloads of foods, medicines, cooking fuel, necessities of all kinds, including heating fuel and electricity continue to roll into Hamas-controlled territory.
Yet Hamas and its sister terror groups find it expedient to attack the very source of vital supplies headed for Gaza. Counter-intuitive, or deliberately connived for the purpose of ensuring that any vestiges of what could be construed as normality does not settle into Gazan life, that its civilians continue to suffer from deprivation of normalcy. It simply does not serve the agenda of the terror groups to have a complacent, well-fed and healthy civilian population.
Hamas and its allied terror groups see their best interests for the hoped-for destruction of Israel in a bitterly restive, impoverished and fearful civilian population. A population ready to believe what their purported protectors tell them, that Israel alone is responsible for their dire conditions of deprivation. A starving population attracts world attention, and with it condemnation of Israel, to the great delight of Hamas.
An angry, anxious and fearful population on the verge of starvation is readily manipulated and controlled. They will march in loud protest, on demand and command. They will eagerly step over downed barricades to flood into Egypt, presenting as humanitarian flotsam. Their presence as fearful and needy fellow Arabs embarrasses and frightens the Egyptians.
Who well know and recognize the theatre in the event, but are unable to protest too loudly or forcefully remove the pathetic intruders too speedily, lest world opinion turn against them, too, as complicit with Israel in the abandonment of peoples' humanitarian needs. Public opinion worldwide, at one time in history in support of Israel, post-Holocaust, has now bent to the prevailing view of oppressor-oppressed.
Unmindful, uncaring, that Gazan terrorists continue to target their rockets further and further into Israel. That peace-loving Palestinians who want nothing other than their due, and a state of their own, will prove their neighbourliness and the prospect of the future by grouping together on highways to attack Israeli motorists, or roam in agricultural areas and uproot crops on Israeli farms.
Or that terror groups continue to smuggle weapons into the West Bank and Gaza Strip by the truckload. Aided and abetted by the demands of the international community insisting that roadblocks and barriers be removed to permit the free flow of traffic, goods and people from both sites into Israel. Handily enabling an escalation of rock-throwing at motorists, firebombing at civilians, and shooting attacks wherever feasibly seen.
And then the IDF goes into action, spurred by the not-unreasonable requirement to protect their country and its citizens. And the West reports on these events, with headlines writ large: "Surprise attack stirs hostilities along Gaza".
