Another Creepy-Crawly

He is not normally given to litigation, he claims, but when his good name was besmirched by a publication and an interview aired on the Canadian Broadcasting System, alerting friends and acquaintances to his status as a racist, he thought it wise to take action. Racist, and just incidentally an anti-Semite's anti-Semite.

Who, me? he steadfastly denies allegations set against him, and testifies in court that he is simply an ordinary person who has some outstanding issues with Canada's immigration criteria. Issues that just happen to be reflected in the mind-sets of some other notable Canadians.

He is not a racist, not an anti-Semite, but oddly enough he has engaged none other than the notoriously racist, Jew-hating, Holocaust-denying Douglas H. Christie. Just one of those things, that's all, signifying little other than that Mr. Christie was available and willing to defend one whose philosophy so closely resembled his own. Coincidence, put it down to that.

In any event, Mr. Macdonald is suing Liberal political strategist and human-rights activist, Warren Kinsella, for defamation. Mr. Kinsella had identified Mr. Macdonald as a racist, and Mr. Macdonald has taken umbrage at that patently unfair and untrue characterization of himself.

Mr. Macdonald claims, furthermore, as he testified during the trial now taking place, not to have known how it was that an article he wrote respecting immigration and the place of "Jews in society" appeared in yet another of Canada's finest specimens of humble and peace-loving citizens, pluralist-defending - Ernst Zundel's website. Ah, the redoubtable, hate-mongering, Holocaust-denying Ernst Zundel, another of Canada's outstanding citizens.

They form a venal and venomous cabal, and always seem to find one another, to take comfort in their shared societal psychopathy. Exemplifying in their very special ways the utter banality of evil. Unfortunately for Mr. Macdonald, the defence was able to clear up the mystery of how his diatribes against Jews and other minorities came to be published on Mr. Zundel's website.

Evidence was admitted in the shape of audio tapes where Mr. Zundel identifies himself on a telephone-answering machine, confirming receipt of faxed documents from Mr. Macdonald, and asking permission to place them on the website. Mr. Macdonald, now 83 years of age, must be suffering from slight memory loss. He has forgotten his links to members of the Ku Klux Klan, and his support for their vile agenda.

Who, in their right mind, wouldn't want to forget, after all?

His defence rests with the statement that what he wrote represented a "combination of statements of fact and expressions of opinion" constituting "fair comment made in good faith and without malice". Without malice? Worth $1.2-million, without malice in his suit against Mr. Kinsella and the CBC.

He doesn't much care whether the money comes from one or the other, simply to be awarded it by the court to soothe his frayed feelings.

Mr. Macdonald's manuscript contained his opinion that Canadians were "consumed with guilt" over the Holocaust, which resulted in their permitting Jews (among other undesirables) to enter the country and to embark on an "acquisition rampage", acquiring vested interests in the legal, educational, financial, real estate and political-affairs and foreign-policy sectors of Canadian life. Assimilation, in short.

He allowed as how he shared some views on immigration with the former grand wizard of the Canadian Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, James Allen McQuirter. The grand wizard did Mr. Macdonald the inestimable honour of staying over at one of his homes, when he was in Ottawa for several days. And Mr. Macdonald was flattered that Mr. McQuirter looked up to him and respected him.

Why would a character such as the grand wizard of the Canadian Knights of the Ku Klux Klan admire one such as Mr. Macdonald? Why would Mr. Macdonald consort with such as the likes of Ernst Zundel, and select as his legal representative a man with the reputation that Mr. Christie enjoys, other than that they share a lethal hatred and a social antipathy toward minorities?

What a fortuitously-infamous round-up of Canada's most ferociously racist scumbags. As for Mr. Macdonald's veracity; we know him by the company he keeps. Lest we forget.
