Cease, Desist!

The United Nations' Ban Ki-Moon now insists that Israel unilaterally pull back from its incursion into Gaza. The intransigence of Hamas in refusing to halt its cross-border rocket assaults, until Israel first ceases its offensive in Gaza has had its desired effect. But Israel, of course, has no intention of obeying a direct order from the international community to commit to a course of action that will be harmful to its existence.

Nor should it, for no other country representing the international community would withdraw its protective forces from a resolute enemy's continual onslaught, because of reproach it receives externally. Israel insists that before it commits to a truce agreement it must have assurance of a durable, reliable and lasting peace. And that the countless underground tunnels leading from Egypt into Gaza will no longer function to continue arming Hamas.

Entirely reasonable, but alas, not reasonable enough for Israel's many and ready critics. Who somehow managed to overlook, time and time again the insufferable conditions under which the country struggled to protect its citizens against ongoing violence. Where were the protests then? For that matter, the protests undertaken throughout much of the world, that of the Muslim countries and elsewhere, were nowhere to be seen when Israel was continually under attack.

The resolute righteousness with which the liberal-left denounces Israel has been somewhat invisible when it comes to decrying atrocities that are being committed every day of the year in countries with a Muslim-led government, preying on its helpless citizens. Israel remains the world's perennial scapegoat; for this is a country that is a haven for Jews, dedicated to the well-being and safety of world Jewry. No other country provided that function in the past.

Hamas fighters in Gaza, badly battered by the IDF, have succumbed to the dire need to surrender to the practicality of a ceasefire. Their leaders think otherwise. Those leaders, most of whom are safely ensconced underground in protective bunkers, while the rank-and-file present as targets for Israeli rage. Not even the mounting death toll of Gazans, many representing civilians, women and children, is sufficient to convince Hamas that resistance to an enduring peace is futile.

The Hamas hierarchy, carefully hidden in safety in Lebanon and Syria, insist that Hamas, their instrument of terror and death for Israel, must never surrender to the sacrilegious military might of a Jewish nation. There are no sacrifices too great for these heroic leaders to accept for the greater need to deny Israel's existence.

"Safwat Higazi: "When I Wake Up... I [Count the] Martyrs to Know How Much Happiness There Is in Heaven and On Earth... I Wake Up in the Morning to See How Many Children Will Remain Children Forever
"Egyptian cleric Safwat Higazi: "When I wake up in the morning, I check on the number of martyrs to know how much happiness there is in heaven and on earth. I do not wake up to see how many of us have been killed. No, I wake up to see how many bridegrooms have been wedded in the heavens, how many brides have been wedded in the heavens. I do not wake up in the morning to see how many children have been killed. I wake up to see how many children will vouch for their relatives. I wake up in the morning to see how many children will remain children forever. I wake up in the morning to see how many children will carry jugs of water to the sink of the Messenger of Allah.
"The blood of the martyrs shines light upon everything between heaven and earth. I want to know the number of martyrs and the number of wounded, in order to know how many liters of the blood of believers has been spilled, how many liters of the blood of believers have been spilled on the land of Gaza, increasing its purity, cleanliness, and honor."
