Fateful Retribution
Such things happen. Giving aid and comfort to the enemy. A catastrophe for one group, and a public relations triumph for the other. Reversing utterly a situation which had been quite the contrary a short while earlier. It is a matter of fate and fortune, neither of which mankind controls. But which controls, far too often, the trajectory of human plans as they go awry.The elite, consummately trained American Navy SEALs triumphed in their precision-performance raid on the Abbottabad Osama bin Laden family compound in Pakistan. The operation was secretive and perfectly well executed, and led to a further estrangement between Pakistan and the United States in their 'war on terror'.
Where, in reality, the United States and its NATO allies have indeed fought, and are continuing to, a war on terror. While Pakistan, which surreptitiously mounted the terror war, continues to encourage it while denying any such charges, despite proof of ongoing conspiratorial assistance to fanatical jihadists.
The much-rehearsed raid carried out by specially selected members of the Team Six unit that destroyed the life of the world's number one terror agent, was meant to dispatch bin Laden and strike a decisive blow against al-Qaeda, the inspiration for violent terrorism. His supporters pledged revenge, and the Taliban, against whom NATO continues to battle in Afghanistan, appear to have met success.
The death of Osama bin Laden avenged by the death of 22 elite U.S. Navy SEAL Team Six troops. With eight Afghan commandos thrown in for good measure. A heavy-duty, ponderous, heavy-lift helicopter, at its most vulnerable during a rescue operation from a scheduled night-time raid on Taliban positions, brought down by Taliban fire.
The Afghan Taliban are now in full celebratory mode, having dispatched no fewer than 30 American military personnel and eight Afghan military. A high-profile success that will most certainly enhance their reputation where they know it will count.
