Catholic Brazil

How brutally assaultive, and punitive the Roman Catholic Church is to women's interests. How utterly uncompassionate and unkind to the plight of female children who bear the outcome of men's uncontrolled passions and lust. How forgiving the Church is to those of her own who sin and destroy the lives of the innocent and the trusting.

Jose Cardoso Sobrinho, Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, furious at the insult to God's word sent down through the infallible pronunciations of the Pope and the Vatican's established order, has taken steps to excommunicate a child's mother, her doctors and any others whom he can, in his righteous wrath, identify as disobeying "the law of God".

Doctors in the city of Recife, on Wednesday took pity on a child whose trust in those entrusted with her care had been abused, and performed an abortion to free her from the burden of carrying two foetuses to term. They assessed her medical situation as extremely dangerous. A frail nine-year-old, they feared she would die.

"As doctors, we could not allow a girl of nine to suffer like this or until she paid with her own life", said one of the doctors who assisted in the child's abortion. Abortion is illegal in Brazil, the most Catholic population-wise of any other country. The exception being cases of rape and/or when the mother's life would be endangered.

The little girl who had been sexually assaulted by her step-father from the age of six onward was discovered to be almost four months' pregnant when she complained of stomach pains. Her stepfather who has since admitted to raping her also appears to have sexually exploited the child's physically handicapped 14-year-old sister.

"I am shocked by the radical position of this religion which, wrongly saying it is defending a life, puts another life in danger that is as important as any other", said a shocked Jose Gomes Temporarao, the country's minister of health, affirming that the doctors in performing the procedure acted "strictly within the law".

It has also been reported that another, 11-year-old girl in southern Brazil has been hospitalized after being found seven months' pregnant as a result of sexual abuse by her adoptive father. He informed police, as he turned himself in, that his sexual relations with his adopted daughter had been initiated by her.
