Terror In The World
It presents its deaths-head face everywhere. Terror as a political statement, as a rejection of all and any other means of reaching an acceptable conclusion to a perceived offence, past or present. The grievances of ethnic, religious, political groups committed to their singular view of how things should eventuate, irrespective of the atrocities they commit in the process of securing their determined aspirations.All of the countries of Africa where tribal groups share space within borders so carelessly drawn by the colonialists happy at long last to depart and leave the 'natives' to their own devices, their time-honoured method of settling grievances, leaving millions homeless, murdering hundreds of thousands, raping women and children, and withdrawing from the moral ranks of humanity in an abandon of blood-lust.
Countries like the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Burma, Pakistan, China and Russia all waging their ugly wars of dominance and brutal central authority upon groups whose autonomy as nations in their own right were wrenched from them as they were haphazardly assimilated within a larger country hungry for territorial advantage, and for natural resource claims.
The British Isles, so long rent by a bitter war in Northern Ireland between Catholic and Protestant thugs willing to kill at random for the greater good of attaining freedom from England, put paid to the conflict not all that long ago. Seems you cannot kill the super-abundant presence of those whose dedication to a burning cause gives them the freedom to prey on others and display their prowess in death-dealing.
In Afghanistan roadside bombs and IEDs explode with impunity whether in the countryside or within the safe confines of Kandahar by the Taliban dedicated to their vision of Islamist sharia law. One day after another the atrocities mount, as the terrorists insist that it is an abomination in Allah's eyes that women appear in public, that children and girls be granted an education.
In Iraq, day after day, the sectarian violence between the two major branches of Islam celebrates their shared religion by unstinting bloodshed. Suicide bombers can be found among the religiously demented, those with mental handicaps, the weak and the defenceless against strident demands by recruiters that the cause, to serve the will of Allah, is not to be denied.
For, as proudly proclaimed by five terrorists held on charges of plotting the 9/11 attacks in the United States, theirs was a divine mission, to kill and terrorize Americans as an offering to God. The accusations levelled against them represent high praise: "To us they are badges of honour, which we carry with pride. We are terrorists to the bone."
