The Future of Mechanized, Robotic Warfare

The dog-sized machines produced by Ghost Robotics are equipped with onboard cameras and sensors. Their purpose is to monitor for the presence of intruders along the perimeter of an army base. Capable of trotting along for as long as 7-1/2 hours before requiring a recharge, the machines, not intended for the replacement of real military dogs, can be assembled in 15 minutes, and limbs that become damaged replaced even more expeditiously.
 
The machines come equipped with Wi-Fi and 4G LTE to enable live information sent to its operator. Over one hundred of these robot dogs have been shipped in 2020, with the intention to send off over 250 in 2021. The robots represent part of the ambitions by the military to achieve an Advanced Battle Management System using a network of innovations like artificial intelligence and robotics for the purpose of detecting and defending against threats.
 
These high-tech canines labelled Vision 60 are seen as a security enhancement, forming part of a plan to replace stationary surveillance cameras at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida. For their part, their manufacturer, Ghost Robotics. contracted by the U.S. Department of Defence, looks toward a future scenario where the machines surpass merely patrolling duties. A step forward would relate to introducing robot dogs to conflict zones.
 
Put into use, the robots' presence will enable humans in the military to focus on other, less mundane tasks. Philadelphia-based Ghost Robotics, founded in 2015, designed the drone with four legs as an alternative, to "feel the world". Its mechanical legs allow it to retain its equilibrium in balance while prowling through water, tall grass and like terrain.

Sub-zero temperatures are no problem, since the computerized 'dogs' are able to operate in such conditions; produced to move just as animals do, they are able to climb stairs, run and turn themselves into an upright position if knocked over or tumbled. Motors control the legs and based on alterations in ground pressure, adjust accordingly. That reliance on motors for navigation purposes makes Ghost Robotics more flexible than Boston Dynamics' devices with their use of sensors.
 
Appearing for a demonstration at Tyndall base last month, the robot canines operated with the use of a remote control. Programmed for a patrol path, they roam semi-autonomously, their handlers capable of controlling them through virtual-reality headsets if required. Defenders who would otherwise be on patrol can now focus on training, security and overall situational awareness on the base, with the presence of the military-grade canines deployed to patrolling.
 
The canine robots have bomb-disabling applications, but at the present time there are no immediate plans to weaponize them. Tyndall represents the first military base in the U.S. to integrate the robots on a full-time basis. The Australian military in 2019 experimented to assess how it could leverage the robots in the "future of land warfare" in a collaboration between Ghost Robotics and the Aussie army.

Unions have for decades fought the concept of increasing robot automation, logically anticipating every time a machine is placed into workflow, yet another labourer becomes unemployed. The introduction of the global pandemic has been responsible for a calculation shift, since robots cannot be infected with COVID, but their human counterparts can, and will be. Now, the workplace challenge has also become the workplace answer to social distancing the workforce.

With the emphasis on protecting human labour from contracting the coronavirus, there has been an acceleration of robotic labour to help prevent contagion among workers. Once that shift has taken place and is humming along, no change in the virus status will herald a reversal of the situation; robots once in place will remain in place and the labour dynamic has changed for good. The workplace looks a lot different, with the spread of windshield-mounted toll detectors, automated factory floor cleaners, salad-chopping machines in grocery stores, mechanical butlers at hotels, and so forth.

A querulous lament is raised: what happens with the men and women who once laboured where robots now reign? It has been many years in the making beyond the anxiety and study behind the impact of technology in the workforce. Anxieties such as personal vehicles not after all, destroying the passenger train and bus transit systems, nor did ATMs, as feared put bank clerks out of employment; rather more were hired as banks offered a wider range of services.

So have robotics put people out of jobs? They have in the past and they will now in the latest configuration of mechanization as opposed to human labour. And union leaders scratch their heads in frustration. "In the auto industry, we see COVID accelerating transformation toward digitization" stated Georg Leutert, head of the automotive and aerospace industries at Geneva-based IndustriALL Global Union. It was all but inevitable and the appearance of SARS-CoV-2 sped up the revolution.

"If automation is unbridled it's going to be a threat", warned Mark Lauritsen of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union in North America, even while acknowledging that in an effort to avoid disruption in the meat industry caused by the virus, automation is set to continue. And then there is the fallout of office workers now working remotely from home, no longer supporting the in-office entrepreneurs from sandwich stall operators and janitors to bus drivers. Another facet of automation destroying jobs.

Administration support employment usually working in office towers has been reduced since last year by approximately 700,000 lost jobs according to data supplied by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The stock market biased toward technology companies, drives investors away from labour-intensive industries in the aura of the pandemic. Retail work is not immune to the effect of automation with 500,000 fewer such jobs than last year.

According to the BLS, transportation and warehousing are now 100,000 jobs under the levels seen a year earlier. Sales, however, have reached their highest level on record, driven for the most part by e-commerce itself employing more automation than brick-and-mortar stores. In October the World Economic Forum reported 43 percent of businesses surveyed see their future in reducing the workforce as a result of technology innovation even as 34 percent intend to expand their workforce for the very same reason.

As an example,t he Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission installed an electronic tolling system and consequently cut 500 jobs. Electric vehicle startup Lucid Motors built a 999,000-square-foot electric vehicle factory in Casa Grande, Arizona planning to begin production on a $160,000 EV in 2021. It has planned its production around the belief that one pandemic will follow another, preparing for that eventuality with total production mechanization.

Interest in greater mechanization has leaped to the fore in mining with Caterpillar Inc. chief executive Jim Umpleby stating that older equipment will likely be replaced by digital trucks, while autonomous technologies will reduce proximity among workers. According to Juan Cariamo, chairman of CNP, a public-private group that helps test mining technologies in Chile, the virus has advanced long-term changes through forcing companies to relocate employees off-site.

"The pandemic has imposed a sense of urgency. Projects that were already in the pipeline are being sped up", he explained. The world's largest miner, BHP Group, established a $800 million program adding 500 autonomous trucks in iron ore and coal mines in Australia while considering adopting driverless trucks at copper mines in Chile. In Chile, the mining industry employed 201,000 workers in September, reduced 15 percent from the year before; the lowest in a decade according to Chile's Mining Council.

And Marcus Casey an economist at University of Illinois points out the obvious: the more people who cannot find work, the greater the risk of social unrest.

China, the Restless Technology Giant

Typically, the middle class anywhere in the world gets bored easily, and is forever on the lookout for anything new, trendy, interesting. So it is in North America and so it is in China, the most populous country in the world. A China that in modern times has undergone vast social, cultural, political upheavals and has now settled into an amalgam of ideology, politics and practicality, where the nation is officially Communist and the driver of its economy is capitalism, modified to suit its political ideology and succeeding to an incredible degree.

China is in a great big hurry. In its frantic pace to succeed economically, to draw its vast population once mired in deep poverty, into the middle class, it has taken many short-cuts. Genetically, Chinese are inclined toward high intelligence, capable of producing world-grade innovation, scientific enquiry, technological advancement second to none. But their fine, enquiring minds are given to impatience because the government cannot waste time nurturing cerebral invention, viewing it as much more efficient to build on what other fertile minds elsewhere have invented.

China has embraced artificial intelligence, hailing it as the advance of the future to enable it to reach ever greater degrees of success in production, export, internal regulation, and aspiring heights of space exploration. Some of those advances also serve to titillate the sense of novelty so enjoyed by people who may appreciate the operation of dancing robots more than they do the trials of highways embedded with energy sources to battery-up electrical vehicles and send them on their ecological way.

Population control is envisaged through face recognition technology, to keep tabs on people who may engage in regime-challenging activities; for security purposes that kind of technology, if it works, is worth its weight in gold-encrusted renminbi. Futuristic invention thrills the Chinese. That their government is so fully invested in it for purposes serious and frivolous only serves to swell their pride. The invention of robotic mind-readers, for example, is an amazing concept which, unfortunately, doesn't work, much less that of robotic fire detectors which fail the test.

But the concept is terrific. As is the E-Patrol Robotic Sheriff, security robots positioned at train stations and airports throughout China to patrol high-speed rail stations with the use of facial recognition to follow suspicious characters, along with measuring air quality and as well detect the presence of fires. Nice work if you get get it. And robots performing tai chi and comedy routines along with singing and dancing represent high-art entertainment for the populace.

Restaurant robots are the rage, holding trays of food and delivering them to customers. More or less; less, actually. The customers take quick snaps of the robots holding their orders, then the waitresses take over, divesting the robots of the trays of food they are incapable of lowering to table height, to serve them to the discriminating, waiting clientele. Despite which, restaurant patrons remain impressed with the show.

Alas, there is also reality wherein: "There is a combination of things going on. A strong dollar, China slowing, concern about a trade war between China and the U.S., which does not bode well for China in particular but for the global economy as well", interjects Simona Gambarini, an economist at Capital Economics. The renminbi has fallen more than 9 percent against the dollar in the last six months, and China's index of blue chip stocks is off 19 percent this year.

Robots can even take up cooking jobs, like slicing noodles or doing simple prep tasks.
